MADEIRA
FLOWER FESTIVAL
From April 19th to 25th the
celebrations of Madeira Flower
festival return to Funchal, once again,
filling the main streets of the city with colour.
The Madeira Flower Festival brings numerous
initiatives to the city’s downtown, with a special highlight for
the magnificent and typical floral carpets throughout the Arriaga
Avenue and the traditional Flower Exhibition, which will be held
at the Restauração Square.
During the weekend are held the main events of this festival.
On Saturday hundreds of children gather at the Município Square
creating a beautiful flower mural, symbolically named “the Wall of
Hope”. On Sunday the highlight goes to the always exquisite Flower
Parade combining blooming decorations, aromas and music, leading
to downtown Funchal many locals and visitors.
Alongside these events, also takes place musical concerts and
performances by different Regional folklore groups.

“THE ICONOGRAPHY OF SÃO LOURENÇO PALACE IN
THE COLLECTIONS OF HOUSE-MUSEUM FREDERICO
DE FREITAS AND QUINTA DAS CRUZES MUSEUM”
In 2011 the Directorate of Museums premièred a brand new project
so-called: “Shared Experiences”. It aimed to share know-hows by assembly
and confronting the different collections existent in Madeira Museums,
promoting new partnerships and innovative contexts of exhibition. During
the past year were held six exhibitions within this project, involving
the Quinta das Cruzes Museum, House-museum Frederico de Freitas,
Madeira Ethnographic Museum, Vicentes Photographia Museum and the
Contemporary Art Museum of Funchal. Those six displays were: “The
Maios necklaces and the spring in the 18th Century Portuguese Jewellery”;
“Mirror, mirror”; (Un)likely Everyday Life; Art Nouveau and Art Deco: the
Silence of Forms; Arts of the Table - European china of the 18th and 19th
centuries and “An Attentive Look”.
For 2012 is already being carried on a programme with other new
projects, once again targeted to share experiences, but now including
circle of Museums.
So, on April 18th, celebrating the International Day for Monuments
and Sites opens an exhibition at the São Lourenço Palace, in Funchal. “The
Iconography of São Lourenço Palace in the collections of House-museum
Frederico de Freitas and Quinta das Cruzes museum”.
The display results from a straight collaboration between DRAC Directorate of Museums and the São Lourenço Palace Museum Services,
with a special emphasis on the particular commitment of Counsel Ireneu
Barreto, the current representative of the Portuguese Republic in the
Autonomous Region of Madeira.
The exhibition may be attended until June 30th.
