THE MANNERISM AND THE BAROQUE STYLES
The Department of Cultural Affairs yearly opens an
exhibition celebrating the World Heritage Day. The Direction
of Services of Cultural Heritage has conceived a display under
the theme of two great art movements: the Mannerism and the
Baroque. “Get acquainted with Cultural Heritage: The Mannerism
and the Baroque styles – From modest movements to exuberant
volumes” opens on April 18th at the Sala dos Arcos - Colégio dos
Jesuítas and may be visited until the 17th of June.
The exhibition aims to highlight the potential of local
Heritage as a privileged instrument of our educational system in
the development of its student’s knowledge and skills.
The exhibition is divided in two parts. A theoretical one,
linked to the framework of the
seasons and concepts of both
artistic styles, and a practical one,
where visitors can apply the concepts
previously explained.
The International World Heritage
Day was created by ICOMOS (International
Council on Monuments and Sites) on April
18th of 1982 and approved by the UNESCO
(United Nations Educational, Scientific and
Cultural Organization) in the following
year. This celebration aims to raise
public awareness towards the
diversity and vulnerability of
cultural assets, as well as
the effort involved in
its protection and
preservation.

“BLUE REMEMBERED HILLS”
After being on the
stage
of
the
National
Theatre D. Maria II, the
play
by
the
English
dramatist Dennis Potter
premières in Madeira at
the congress centre of
Porto Santo Island, and a
few days later at the Casa
das Mudas Arts Center, in
Calheta.
The
original
“Blue
Remembered Hills”, tells
a story about childhood,
theatre
namely, «the land of lost content» as written in the lyrics of A.E.
Housman, which grant a theme to the play.
Willie, Peter, John, Raymond, Donald, Angela and Audrey
are seven friends who usually play in the woods, near the village
where they live during the summer holidays. They play wars,
parents, squirrel hunt, nurses and doctors.
Beatriz Batarda is the stage director of this text, considered
to be shocking and simultaneously touching, in which adult
actors play a group of children that discover the violence of the
world around them and try to understand it by imitating the
reality of adults.
Albano Jerónimo, Bruno Nogueira, Dinarte Branco, Elsa
Oliveira, Leonor Salgueiro, Luísa Cruz and Nuno Nunes are the
actors performing these seven friends.

“I AM THEM!!!”
Eduardo Gaspar returns to the Municipality of Culture with
the comedy “I am them – we do about everything to pay the rent,
don’t we?” - An initiative that has been held side by side with
the Municipality of Culture project, since its take off in 2007 at
Ponta do Sol.
What happens when a maid convinces her own boss on the
eve of his première that he’s a terrible actor? He kills himself?
Dismisses the employee? Or simply does not show up on at
the theatre and without his awareness provides her with an
opportunity to take his place in the play “I am them – we do about
everything to pay the rent, don’t we?”
This is the story if Lucineide (the name of the dangerous
employee), who was once an actress and had the guts to do
anything to discourage her boss from performing, exclusively
for the opportunity of going back
on stage. She is certain about her
talent and that success results
from a combination of innate
abilities with a large
share of luck.
