Text I
WHY JUNIOR ISN’T CALLED JUNIOR ANYMORE
There are as many as 10,000 names in the English
language, but only a few hundred are commonly used.
Names go in and out of fashion — often giving
away a person’s age. Handles such as Clarence and
Agnes tend to belong to seniors while Craig and Wendy
are more likely to be baby boomers.
“We’re seeing a return to biblical names such as
Rebecca for girls and Matthew for boys,” notes Edward
Callary, professor of English at Northern Illinois
University and editor of Names, the journal of the
American Name Society.
He revealed more fascinating facts:
Girl’s names are more trendy than boys’ — not a
single one of the 10 most popular girls’ names in 1950
was on the top list in 1990.
Boys’ names often become girl’s names — for
instance, Shirley and Marion were once names for men.
More recently, Shannon and Ashley have switched from
male to female. Oddly, girl’s names never become
boys’.
One trend on the wane: naming boys after their
dads, says Callary.
“In the United States 10 to 20 percent of men used
to be a Junior. Today, that has almost disappeared.
Instead, families are using the father’s first name as the
son’s middle name.
“Naming a person Junior carries a lot of emotional
baggage. Today, the tendency is to treat people more as
individuals.”
Callary projects that the 10 most popular names for
baby girls in the rest of the decade will be Emma,
Emily, Hanna, Heather, Jamie, Kaleigh, Kelsey, Laura,
Margaret and Rachel.
And the 10 hottest names for boys will be Austin,
Cody Caleb, Jacob, Jared, Jason, Lucas, Nathan, Taylor
and Zachary.
