Aloha fellow Rotarians A message from President Don “Rock” Arakaki: Aloha Fellow Rotarians, This past Wednesday Margaret, Gail, Fran, Albert, Joyce and I assisted the Ready to Learn Program at Ma’ili Elementary School we sorted and packed school supplies for students in Waianae. Mahalo to Gail and Fran for coordinating this project with Rita Grilho from the Waianae High School Alumni Association. Our activities for this month are: On July 22, 2014, we are having the Larry Hatfield Scholarship Golf Tournament at Makaha Valley Country Club after our meeting and we ask you to invite your friends to participate in this very worthy scholarship fundraiser. Please let me know if you are available on July 26, 2014 to assist with the Youth Sports Physical Exams at Waianae Intermediate School. No.385–07/18/14 At our last meeting on July 15, 2014, our guest speaker was John Cummings from the Department of Emergency Management, C&C of Honolulu and he spoke about disaster preparedness and response. As a matter of fact on July 18, a tropical storm name Wali formed in the Central Pacific and is expected to hit Hawaii this weekend with rain and strong winds that could cause floods, power outage, etc. Please take precaution and be prepared. Hurricane Season is from June to November and we must be prepared in the event the “Makani” hits Hawaii. At our next week’s meeting, Corporal Joe Tabarejo from the HPD Community Policing will be speaking about criminal activities on the Waianae Coast and also an effort to organize a Disaster Preparedness Committee in Waianae. The Waianae Military Civilian Advisory Council (WMCAC) will take the lead in this program and the objective is to consolidate organizations in Waianae that have disaster preparedness programs. The Waianae Disaster Preparedness program will be part of the Cross-Island Resilience Program made up of many districts on Oahu which is supported by the Department of Emergency Management, Red Cross, and other emergency agencies. Thank you for your Service Above Self and your dedication to our rotary club as we “Light Up Rotary” this year. New concrete slab WCRC volunteers along with Waianae High School Alumni & Community Foundation and other volunteers joined in to help sort and bag school supplies for students here on our Westside. Our member’s support of this project is a prime example of "Service Above Self". The committee which consists of Gail Gomes Chair, committee members Joanna Miranda, D.J. DeTomaso, Frances Ah Nee and Inga Yoon has their work cut out for them. They will be meeting on July 21st. We are very fortunate to have our judges from our 2014 96792 Pride calendar agree to be our official judges again this year. They are Brittany Gomes, Eric Uptegrove and Guy Sibilla. REMINDER! WCRC Semi-Annual Dues meeting at 1:00 pm. The cost is $90 per player 3-4-somes only. Organizers for this event are Interact Advisor Brad Hatfield and Rotarian Dennis Miyashiro. The Waianae Coast Rotary Club Scholarship Golf Tournament in Memory of Larry Hatfield is scheduled for Tuesday, July 22, 2014, at the Makaha Valley Country Club (Makaha East Course); following our Rotary Club Aloha, Laura Steelquist District Governor 2014-2015 [email protected] Created by Secretary Nalani Flinn we now have a mobile club library with training manuals available for check out. This was created to help our members who wish to learn more about their committee which they selected to work on or a committee they are interested in but need more information. In addition to being able to check out these manuals our secretary Nalani Flinn will be happy to assist if the members need help or clarification etc. The mobile library is with Nalani and brought to each meeting.
