Last Meeting
Last Week’s Program
Juan Carlos Cheves Gundersen
President Nancy presided. Bob Lorenz delivered the invocation. Sue Masters led the Pledge
of Allegiance and our guest speaker Juan Carlos
Cheves Gundersen led the 4 Way Test. Steve
Krchniak directed a rousing rendition of our
Guatemala Water Initiative
National Anthem.
We all witnessed and enjoyed a special and
poignant moment as the Club rose in ovation to
thank President Nancy for a job well done this
past year. Thank you Nancy for your outstanding leadership.
And as another sign that we were ending a Rotary year, President Nancy acknowledged and
thanked Immediate Past President Ray Faubion
for his service to the Club.
A Star Spangled Bonita Spectacular
A few raindrops did not deter a group of happy and determined group of Rotarians
from serving beer to those
attending Star Spangled Bonita Sunday evening. Thanks to all who
participated. The entire evening was absolutely spectacular.
Last week Sandy Scoggins introduced us to Juan
Carlos Cheves Gundersen. Juan, President of
the Rotary Club of Guatemala Sur, is also one
of the driving architects of the Guatemala Water
Initiative which Sandy and this Club have so
passionately supported.
Juan, during his presentation, created a comprehensive and compelling case for the water initiative. 6,000 children die every single day from
waterborne illness. Water quality and sanitations are absolutely key and
effective sources of intervention to mediate and
combat this problem.
Enter the Q Beta water
filter. Field tested in rural
households with positive
results,
The filters,
equipped with BP ceramic
candles, provide a highly effective barrier to particles and pathogens. The filters are practical and
efficient, providing safe, clean water to a household for over two years.
The results have been impactful. Since December, 2006 over 15,200 families in several regions of
Guatemala have benefited from this Initiative.
Juan stressed,
however, that
much
work
remains. The
Water Initiative has proven
to be a worthwhile Rotary
project, providing practical
solutions to a major problem. He suggested that
Water is a priority for Rotary International and
pointed to challenges at Santa Cruz La Laguna as
one way in which the things learned in implementing the water initiative can be leveraged to further
improve the quality of life.
Our Rotary Float...A Historic
Appearance
This past Saturday our Rotary Float made a historic and inaugural appearance in the Bonita
Springs Fourth of July Parade. The hard work of
Ben and Lori Nelson, President Jim, Clara Anne
Graham, Bob Pagel, Peter Zahner, Len Eckert,
Scott Anderson, Bobbi Bird, Gary Price, Ray
Faubion, and Steve Kaskie allowed parade observers to witness and enjoy the largest Rotary Wheel
ever displayed in the City of Bonita Springs. The
Rotary Float majestically traversed the parade
route to the rousing cheers of delighted onlookers.
It was, as the photos suggest, a morning to remember.
We learned that our District will be organizing a
mission trip to Guatemala—with more information
forthcoming. Thank you Juan for your presentation and offering all of us greater insight into what
it means to be Rotarian.
We’ll Miss You Gui
It was good seeing
our RYE student

his return to Brazil. Pictured with

Gui reflected on
the past year and
offered some insights into the World Cup. Best of
luck Gui and thank you. We are all the richer for
having met you and your family. Stay in touch.
And finally...congratulations to Steve McIntosh,
McIntosh
Bobbi Bird,
Bird Nancy Ross and Sue Masters for their
extended perfect attendance achievements.
