Welcome to Jonathan Pereira who was
inducted by President Doug on July 30th.
Jonathan makes his home in the
Streetsville area and runs a real estate
and mortgage brokerage, Paradise Realty
in town. He has proven himself a hard
worker at our different events and we look
forward to his participation and fellowship in
thefuture. How ‘bout a plane ride? (..er...maybe
on 2nd thought, after a few more hours!)
On August 13th, we welcomed Gui,
(Guilherme Rothbarth), our exchange student from Brazil. He presented us with
the Brazilian flag and the banner from his
sponsoring Rotary Club. Presently he is
staying with Ayoub and Jean Ali and will
be attending Streetsville Secondary
School next month.
Boy, what an education living in a
household of 4 women!!

What is ROTARY?
How do you describe the organization called "Rotary"? There are so many characteristics of a Rotary club as
well as the activities of a million Rotarians. There are the features of service, internationality, fellowship,
classifications of each vocation, development of goodwill and world understanding, the emphasis of high ethical
standards, concern for other people and many more descriptive qualities.
In 1976 the Rotary International Board of Directors was interested in creating a concise definition of the
fundamental aspects of Rotary. They turned to the three men who were then serving on Rotary's Public Relations
Committee and requested that a one-sentence definition of Rotary be prepared. After numerous drafts, the committee presented this definition, which has been used ever since in various Rotary publications:
"Rotary is an organization of business and professional persons united worldwide who provide humanitarian
service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations and help build goodwill and peace in the world."
Those 31 words are worth remembering when someone asks, "What is a Rotary club?"
THE FOUR WAY TEST
Is it the TRUTH?
Is it FAIR to all concerned?
Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Larry & Ayoub for the website info and Ron B. for bringing the video from my last Presidency???.
2. Our Exchange Student Gui and I represented our Club at the annual Easter Seals Boat cruise. Over 185 families
and volunteers attended and had a great Day on the water, for some children their first ever boat ride.
3. September R.I. theme month is “New Generations month”? Somebody tell me what that is.
4. September is going to be another busy month. Events include Mayor Hazel’s annual visit on Sep 3, a visit to the
Mississauga Golf & Country Club on Tuesday Sep 8 for a joint meeting with the Mississauga Club, Lynne Genitti’s

What’s New in Rotary Canada
Rotary postage stamp for Canada!
Canada Post will issue a postage stamp in 2010 to commemorate the 100 years
of Rotary in Canada. The design of the stamp will be developed over the next
few months.
Rotary in Quebec -- a difficult start
Reprinted from Rotary Canada -- July 2009
byLouise de Pokomandy
Due to historical and cultural factors, the creation of Rotary clubs in Quebec was slow and difficult.
Until 1960, the Roman Catholic Church was very influential in Quebec and discouraged nonreligious
organizations. It feared that its influence would be diminished and didn’t want its parishioners to be
distracted from the Catholic faith.
The few clubs that were founded were mainly in large cities, established by Anglophone citizens who
were often Protestant.
The Rotary clubs of Montreal (1913) and Quebec (1919) fall into this category. The vast majority of
members were English speakers, and the majority of their business was conducted in this language. Existing members were recruiting from their business networks and didn’t favor the creation of new clubs,
preferring to be part of a privileged and prestigious small group of Rotarians. One of the prerequisites
to become a new member was a command of the English language. Therefore, Rotary was perceived as
an Anglophone organization.
The language issue was sometimes a barrier for membership development. Even in our District 7790,
until the implementation of simultaneous translation around 1990, Rotarians speaking solely French
didn’t feel at ease. All regulations, procedures, documents, and certificates were only available in English.
The nationalist trend among the Québécois, even for those who are not in favor of Quebec's independence, makes them resistant to everything related to the English language. In some clubs, singing the
Canadian national anthem during the meeting, boycotted by Québécois separatists, created problems
for recruiting new members.

Rotary in Quebec... continued
the Good Fellowship Club
Despite all these difficulties, District 7790 has experienced two exceptional periods for the expansion of
Rotary, thanks to the hard work and devotion of two Rotarians.
The first period was between 1940 and 1950, when Arthur Lagueux, a member of the Quebec club, past
governor of District 7790, and 1950-51 RI president, created new clubs and recruited new members.
The second took place around 1990 and was initiated by Jacques Châteauvert, a member of the Quebec
club and 1992-93 governor of District 7790.
The reasons there are fewer clubs in Quebec, with few members compared with the rest of Canada,
seem to find their origin in Quebec's distinctive history and culture. There was also a clear lack of visibility and leadership from the first clubs, which were not inclined to create new ones. It is remarkable
that regardless of all these obstacles, the hard work and dedication of two Rotarians at different times
have led to the creation of numerous clubs and strong membership development.
Volunteer at the 2010 RI Convention
Find out how you can become a member of the HOC (Host Organizing Committee) volunteer family in Montreal.
As you know, Canada will be hosting the Rotary International Convention from June 20-23, 2010 in Montreal.
This is a wonderful opportunity for Rotarians from across Canada and the world to come to Montreal and share their
Rotary knowledge and experience. From the top of Mount Royal to the shores of the St Lawrence River, Montreal
will offer a multicultural experience not to be forgotten. Of course, the members of the Rotary family make the experience even richer!
We would like you to join us in Montreal for the 2010 International Convention and we would like you to become
a member of our HOC (Host Organizing Committee) volunteer family. Rotarians, Friends and Family of Rotary, and
Rotaract members can register at www.hocvolunteers.com .
There will be plenty to do for the convention and many hands make light work ! We hope that you will join us as a
Montreal 2010 HOC volunteer.

THE CRITIQUE
Andy Stabins
This correspondent asked the old Critique to recall the Bingo days of the last decade of the past century. Those were times when the alphabet of business was G.S.T., P.S.T., U.I.C., C.P.P. and N.D.P.
Kimmie, the ideological daughter of Myron Baloney had suffered political execution. Stormin Prestone
Antifreeze was colliding with Lucien Blockhead over seperacism in Kebec. The Now Defunct Party was
In Deep Pee and the Revolutionary Party of Capitalists was waiting to take over the Pink Palace. The
Critique was then a newcomer to the alien world of Bingo. His lungs were still those of a man of his
age and he did not know that Bingo was the blacklung fundraiser. However, some of the Club members
loved it. Harvey could light up anywhere in the Bingo emporium. MacDonald, Marr, Matheson and
Nisbet likewise. They worked a corner with bags of money and plentiful ashtrays. They were real men,
squinty eyed from operating in the atmospheric environs of big money who made the rest misty eyed
when visiting the corner of finance. They were the rugged individualistic Marloboro men of the Bingo
hall riding herd over the lost doggies on the floor. The home of the Marlboro men was also the
base of the prize runners. A prize runner had to be one of the fastest persons in Ontario, unfortunately, this crew had peaked some forty years ago. Then there were the floor sellers such as
the Critique. They were non smokers let loose on the floor among the coffin nail bangers and Joe
Camel look-alikes hunched over their Bingo cards. These sellers were racehorses on the floor
saddled with cards and thirty dollars change jingling in their pouches hung strategically over
their own personal valuables. Life on the floor was not as it appeared. These racehorses in search
of loonies and toonies were like the first explorers of Planet Mongo but without an oxygen mask. The
chemical composition of the atmosphere was weird and the aliens plentiful. It was a timeless place.
Many of the aliens sported the hairdos and dress of the 1950’s and experienced deja vue daily. The
racehorses kept trolling for aliens who wished to part with money that they could ill afford to part with.

THE CRITIQUE continued
There was no physical training for Bingo floorsellers, yet they knew that it was best not to breathe at
all, but if one must, then not too deeply. At the end of the evening session there was cleanup. A mess,
just like in the beer tent, but without drunks. By the amount of unfinished drinks it was clear that Bingo
made pop taste bad and that on Planet Mongo a little Export Ale could go a long way. The final chore
was the washup before using the bathroom. In Bingo, wash first, then go. On the way out one had
to pick up the latest free copy of the “Bingo Bugle” self described as
“North America’s Bingo and Gaming Newspaper”. According to this breaking
news source Planet Mongo was a mere speck in the 37 Bingo Hall universe from
Oakville to Richmond Hill to Whitby. Arriving home it was time to put the Bingo
hall uniform and undergarments out in the garden to do their horticultural service
of keeping away the raccoons and skunks. Finally it was time for a semi naked
Bingo worker to retrieve a brace of strategically cooled bottles of Ex and catch up
on the latest news in the “Bingo Bugle”. Ah! Those were the good old Bingo days!
Did You Know?
Club Banners
One of the more colorful traditions of Rotary is the
exchange of club banners. Rotarians traveling to distant locations often take banners to exchange at makeup meetings as a token of friendship. Many clubs use
the decorative banners they have received for attractive displays at club meetings and district events.
By 1959, exchanging banners had become so popular that the RI Board of Directors was concerned the practice would be a financial burden on clubs. It urged Rotarians to “exercise discretion, moderation, and measured judgment in making provision for such exchanges.”
The approximately 20,000 banners in the Rotary History and Archives collection reflect clubs'
hometown pride and their connection with the international organization.
In addition to incorporating the Rotary emblem, banners often include symbols or imagery of a
club's town, region, or country. Others represent local craftsmanship or cultural traditions by displaying leatherwork, weaving, embroidery, or hand-painted designs.

THE LIGHTER SIDE
Believe it or not these questions about Canada were posted on an International Tourism Website.
Obviously the answers are a joke; but the questions were really asked!
Q: I have never seen it warm on Canadian TV, so how do the plants grow? ( England )
A. We import all plants fully grown and then just sit around and watch them die.
Q: Will I be able to see Polar Bears in the street? ( USA )
A: Depends on how much you've been drinking.
Q: I want to walk from Vancouver to Toronto - can I follow the Railroad tracks? ( Sweden )
A: Sure, it's only Four thousand miles, take lots of water.
Q: Is it safe to run around in the bushes in Canada ? ( Sweden )
A: So it's true what they say about Swedes.
Q: Are there any ATM's (cash machines) in Canada ? Can you send me a list of them in Toronto , Vancouver , Edmonton and Halifax ?
( England )
A: No, but you'd better bring a few extra furs for trading purposes.
Q: Can you give me some information about hippo racing in Canada ? ( USA )
A: A-fri-ca is the big triangle shaped continent south of Europe Ca-na-da is that big country to your North...oh forget it. Sure, the hippo
racing is every Tuesday night in Calgary Come naked.
Q: Which direction is North in Canada ? ( USA )
A: Face south and then turn 180 degrees Contact us when you get here and we'll send the rest of the directions.
Q: Can I bring cutlery into Canada ? ( England )
A: Why? Just use your fingers like we do.
Q: Can you send me the Vienna Boys' Choir schedule? ( USA )
A: Aus-t ri-a is that quaint little country bordering Ger-man-y, which is...oh forget it. Sure, the Vienna Boys Choir plays every Tuesday
night in Vancouver and in Calgary , straight after the hippo races. Come naked.
Q: Do you have perfume in Canada ? ( Germany )
A: No, WE don't stink.
Q: I have developed a new product that is the fountain of youth. Where can I sell it in Canada ? ( USA )
A: Anywhere significant numbers of Americans gather.
Q: Can you tell me the regions in British Columbia where the female population is smaller than the male population? ( Italy )
A: Yes, gay nightclubs.
Q: Do you celebrate Thanksgiving in Canada ? ( USA )
A: Only at Thanksgiving.
Q: Are there supermarkets in Toronto and is milk available all year round? ( Germany )
A: No, we are a peaceful civilization of Vegan hunter/gathers. Milk is illegal.
Q: I have a question about a famous animal in Canada , but I forget its name. It's a kind of big horse with horns. ( USA )
A: It's called a Moose. They are tall and very violent, eating the brains of anyone walking close to them. You can scare them off by spraying yourself with human urine before you go out walking.
