For the majority of confirmed exhibitors the countdown for the next edition of Cersaie, the 26th issue of the International Exhibition of Ceramic Tile and Bathroom Furnishings, has already begun. According to the organisers, this edition will once again justify the exhibition’s strategic status in the sector. Estimates predict that the number of visitors will far outstrip the 92 thousand people who visited the 2007 edition, which in itself already represented a 1.1% increase compared to 2006 and was the largest number of visitors recorded since the event adopted its 5-day format. One fifth of the roughly 1 000 exhibitors expected are foreign companies, including Recer, which will help improve other statistical indicators for the exhibition. In particular, a further boost in the number of foreign visitors, which in the previous edition were around 30%, is eagerly anticipated. The north-American architect and designer Thom Mayne designed the poster for the 26th edition. The sixth edition of Constrói Angola, International Exhibition of the Building Industry, Public Works and Safety, which has the active backing of the Angolan Government’s Ministry for Public Works, is establishing itself as an arena for trade and for developing contacts to help promote the main companies in the sector in the local market. The participation of about 240 national and foreign companies in the previous edition of the exhibition, with a particular focus on Portuguese and Brazilian companies, confirms this trend. Covering an area of roughly 10 000 square metres, there will be a broad range of items on display, representing various sectors: construction and construction materials, projects and inspection of works, property developers and estate agents, active and passive safety equipment, environment and energy. Recer will take part in this exhibition for the first time, with a view to strengthening its already solid networking experience in this country. Portugal, Espanha e Alemanha | Portugal, Spain and Germany DESAFIOS DA ADERCUS-RECER Adercus-Recer challenges Julho a Outubro| July to October É uma verdadeira maratona de provas. It is a real marathon of events. Between July and October, the Adercus-Recer athletics team has about 40 competitions on their agenda, most of them in Portugal, but some also in Spain and Germany. In July, preparation will focus on national competitions, but all eyes are set on the European Mountain Running Championship, which will be held in Zell am Harmersbach, in Germany. In August, the Spanish tracks will be the stage for this team that has invested so much in the training of young athletes, without neglecting the high levels of competitiveness. The 3rd stage of the Taça de Portugal em Montanha (Portuguese Mountain Running Cup), in Guarda, and the Portugal Half-Marathon, in Lisbon, are the highlights for September. In October, after various competitions on the Portuguese regional tracks, the Valladolid Half-Marathon, in the heart of Castile, and the Caminhos de Santiago Race, in Compostela, reinforce the team’s reputation at an international level. The objective difficulties that the Portuguese economy is currently going through may be overcome if we have the breadth of vision, drive and boldness to grasp the opportunities we see a little all over the world. In Eastern Europe, Angola and South Africa, the Middle East or North Africa we find attractive growth rates in the building industry, which may represent an alternative for the maturing European markets and may enhance Portuguese companies. With a well-known brand, top-quality services, effective differentiation strategies, with sophistication, design and quality, Portuguese companies also have markets in the more developed countries, due to their competitiveness. For all these reasons, the world ceramics industry is showing remarkable growth. Sometimes it is important to distance ourselves from the time and space in which we operate, to see reality from a new angle. Recer, an increasingly international company, has these two realities before it and this is why it faces the future with prudence, but also ambition. At a time of rapid change, like the present, there is often a temptation to “endure”, trumpeting minimal growth as a huge business success. ANTERO CALVO Presidente do Conselho de Administração Chairman But we should consider another attitude, which is to make the most of the turbulence in the markets to boldly launch structural changes capable of projecting the future in a way that is both sustainable and innovative. This is what Portuguese companies must think about if they want to leave their mark on the global economy of the 21st century. From strength to strength In the last three months, Adercus-Recer has overcome many challenges on various fronts, even if they did not always make it to the podium. Sérgio Nolasco, in the male juniors, finished the 1 500 m of the S. Martinho do Bispo Athletics Prize in 2nd place and set the tone for a similar range of awards among his older team-mates. In the senior women’s 5 000 m competition, Solange Jesus shone though, even though she had been competing at a training rate. In the men’s competition, Ricardo Gomes came 2nd in the 7 250 m race and his fellow team-mate António Pereira was also in the spotlight, finishing in 7th place. In the main cross-country races, held in the Lourosa training track in Santa Maria da Feira, covering a distance of 4 000 m, ADERCUS-Recer added yet another district champion title to the five previously achieved. Marina Bastos was the fastest athlete in the Oliveira do Bairro team, having broken away from her fellow teammates and Eunice Tavares (CR Estarreja) in the second of four laps. In yet another edition of national mountain racing championships, which took place on the slopes of Luso and Buçaco, Márcia Martins set off up the hill in the 8 000 m race, with the aim of finishing among the top six and getting a “passport” to the world championship in Germany. In the end she managed to win bronze. Karting to victory Nobody gave and inch to anyone in terms of competitiveness. The belligerence – in the nicest sense - was what was most evident on the track. And among the more “aggressive” contestants, there were even competitors who did not hesitate to “stick” the kart where… only the kart would fit! Thus ended yet another round of the ENK (National Karting School) Event 2008, at the Baltar Kart Circuit (Paredes). Amidst the excitement of the competition, the dexterity of a young champion shone through: Ricardo Costa, 13 years old, ruled at the wheel of his kart – a single-seater car sponsored by Recer and their partner Macominho. The official driver in the Evolution A category of the “Alfredo César Torres” National Karting School, the son of Jorge Costa, manager of Macominho (Vila Nova de Famalicão), has surprised all and sundry with his performance on the track since he first started in 2001 on the Minhoto circuits. With confident but safe driving and showing no fear of his more experienced rivals, Ricardo Costa, from Vila Nova de Famalicão, has also enhanced the Recer name – his vehicle has the logo-brand of the company on it –, as the fifth general position in the Baltar Sprint Show (2007) and the podium (third place) at the ENK Event (2008) attest. “I’m buying Portuguese” On the 9th of May, the AEP – Portuguese Business Association launched the “Productivity KIT” at the Europarque in Santa Maria da Feira. This kit was created with the aim of enhancing Portuguese products, as part of the project “I’m BUYING Portuguese”, promoted by the AEP and in a national campaign to improve company competitiveness through productivity. The “Productivity KIT” aims to be a working tool that covers eleven topics crucial for the productivity of a modern company in detail. “I’m BUYING Portuguese” currently has the support of 280 companies that represent 1 070 brands and a business turnover of over 6.3 thousand million euro. During the ceremony there was still time to pay tribute to companies, like Recer, that have backed this project to promote national brands from the outset. A sound mind in a sound body More than a merely aesthetic concern, physical exercise has undeniable health benefits and is a gateway to individual wellbeing. This is why Recer has come to promote sports, offering exclusive incentives for its collaborators. The company has recently established a partnership with the Corpo Louco gym in Oliveira do Bairro. Collaborators now have access to a range of activities, at an accessible price and free enrolment (worth 20 euro). To complement this targeted exercise, Recer also provides two sports grounds for its collaborators, which will be available free of charge for users: a synthetic futsal field and a tennis court. Every Saturday, from 11 am to midday, sports fans can, therefore, get together to enjoy moments of leisure in the sports fields, next to the municipal swimming pools in Oliveira do Bairro. The moulds of education Recer doesn’t just have moulds for ceramics. The company is often approached by schools and courses in a wide range of areas for field trips, transforming it into a live lab, where the “moulds” take on an instructional dimension. On the 17th of March, the 14 students of the Logistics and Warehousing class from the Aveiro Vocational Training Centre had the opportunity to learn about the production cycle from start to finish, and the various steps and participants in the process, with a particular focus on the packaging and palletization sector, the storing arrangement of the final product in the various warehouses, methods for separating orders and collection routes. On April Fools day, the 1st of April, students from the Accountancy Course of the Agrupamento Vertical de Escolas de Fiães – Santa Maria da Feira – (Esc. EB2/3, Secundária D. Moisés Alves de Pinho), as part of the study plan for the subjects of Accountancy and Economics, changed their learning sources and there are no reports of attempts at concealment! The end result was a practical class in production management and logistics (product storage and shipment), helping to consolidate the understanding of concepts learnt in class. The promotion of knowledge and understanding of the technologies learnt in the Materials and Technologies topic was, in turn, the aim of the visit organised by the Students Association of the Escola Superior Aveiro Norte, which thus found alternative and complementary training “moulds” for students in the Product Technology and Design course. 5 DOSSIER REABILITAÇÃORenovation File 6 REVISTA RECER JULHO - OUTUBRO 2008 O antes e o depois na… … Capela da Sr.ª da Victória Before and after… The “Casa de Fados ‘à Capella’ – Quinteto de Coimbra” [‘à Capella’ Fado House – Coimbra Quintet], designed by the architects Ângelo Ramalhete, Maria Manuela Ataíde and Pedro Goulão Taborda, was awarded an honourable mention as part of the “Diogo de Castilho” Awards, which were recently organised by the Association of Architects of the Coimbra Region (NARC), as mentioned in the previous edition of this magazine. This project made an important contribution to help safeguard and value Coimbra’s architectural heritage. By opening up the Chapel of Senhora da Victória for public use, it upholds the historic nature of the site, without neglecting functional aspects that give it a more contemporary feel. “This project is a result of the enthusiasm of a group of musicians who thought it would be a good idea to create a Fado House in an abandoned temple and it shows that, when the will exists, the apparently unthinkable can come true”, Ângelo Ramalhete, one of the authors, explained. Narrow, like all medieval streets, it was part of the Jewish quarter, and was then known as Rua do Príncipe. Having walked up the steepest part, we come face to face with the Chapel of Sr.ª da Victória, an ancient name that dates back to a religious order of the 14th century. Its origin is unclear. It is believed that it was Anna Affonso who ordered the construction of this Chapel on Corpo de Deus street, since in her will, dated from the 20th of February 1367, she expressed a desire to be buried at the entrance to that temple. There are also some who argue that a cultural other uses, it was used as a warehouse and residence, which led to its heritage being severely depleted. Although we are looking at a 14th century temple that deserves to be classified as a building of public interest, we found this Chapel in a state of sad neglect and disrepair. Intervention in a building with such a historic weight required a high degree of sensibility. The focus was on remaining loyal to the true character of a place of worship, giving it a new life with dignity, while at the same time adapting it to modern-day demands. The decision to convert this temple into a small cultural space, open to a wide range of art forms such as painting, sculpture, music, music school, singing, poetry, etc, was controversial. foundation was created, completed or just established by the same Anna Affonso, in support of a small hospital founded by her. However, there are written testimonies that contradict these theories, simply stating that she did not found the chapel, but merely finished or completed it. The Chapel was practically destroyed in 1666 and was rebuilt at the end of the 17th century or early 18th century. It seems that some of the walls of the original temple were kept, since the corbels that support the ogees of the chancel are typical of the 14th century and are very similar to the ones that can still be seen in the ruins of the Santa Clara church and monastery, founded by Rainha Santa Isabel shortly before 1327. The Chapel was reformed in 1780 and has existed as a private property to this day. Among REVISTA RECER JULHO - OUTUBRO 2008 elevado para o piano. We accepted the challenge fully aware of the ambitiousness of the project and the limitations imposed by the exiguity of the space. Before offering any explanation of the project behind this intervention, we would like to highlight the importance of the contribution of the workers, of the “Quinteto de Coimbra” and the technicians in its development. We divided the best aspects and the not so good ones among the team that, in the space of five months, managed to achieve the result that we proudly acknowledge today. The initial idea behind the project, which defined the Chancel as the stage area and the Choir and Nave as a space for the audience, ended up being the driving and disciplining force behind the various interventions in the building. The great respect we had for the temple forced us to conceal the kitchen-bar area in a blind box, a box that would also act as a backdrop for projecting images, and to create another elevated stage for the piano. The original stairs of the bell tower were used to provide an access to this stage and the backstage area was used to hide all the technical apparatus for controlling the lighting, sound, exhaust and air conditioning. Lighting and acoustics were constant concerns during the development of the project. Bearing this in mind, glass was used as a windbreak because, apart from its practical aspect, it also acts as a light diffusing screen and enlarges the effects of the oculus of the Choir. A carefully designed plasterboard structure, located beneath the Choir, not only hides the air conditioning boxes, ventilation grids and electrical fittings, but solves the acoustics problems and resolves a problem of scale that arose from the Choir space being increased. The decision to accept the tomb of Anna Affonso as a heritage to be valued and displayed required an in-depth technical analysis for its adequate protection, ventilation and lighting. This gesture is an exceptional event in the room. A new unit with toilet facilities for the public and employees was built from the ruins of the side aisle, making use of the ground floor and basement space. To connect these floors we designed the stairs that carry us to the Choir and the glass box, an astonishing belvedere over the city of Coimbra. This Element was projected with the concern of skilfully combining it with the old building, striving for a discrete appearance but with enough strength to justify it. We should highlight the importance of the glass box in spreading the rays of light that are reflected indirectly on the lightness of the metal staircase, enhancing this effect in the most secluded part of the Chapel. The building was born as a gothic temple; the vicissitudes of history disfigured it, leading to its ruin. Today, through its new functions and architectural recovery, it has acquired a new soul, a new light… This is the slogan of one of Recer’s most recent adverts. But it is not merely an advertising statement. Apart from highlighting the synergies achieved through the architectural projects and construction work of various emblematic buildings, both national and international, such as the Sesimbra & SPA and the Grande Real Villa Itália hotels, it is also a point of honour for Recer, which actively strives to support initiatives that foster the development of Portuguese architecture and its professionals – key vectors for a quality built environment. “Architecture has always been a challenge for finishing ceramics and although, over time, there have been disagreements, fortunately in the last few decades it has been possible to establish a stimulating dialogue”, Antero Marques Calvo, chairman of Recer’s board of directors, asserts. Universities have proved to be privileged stages for the interaction between architecture and ceramics, hosting colloquiums, congresses, seminars and conferences which have played a decisive role in defining both the common ground shared by the two sectors and the challenges required for innovation. Sustainability in architecture and construction is one of these challenges, as was clearly shown by Recer’s active participation in the Seminar “Sustainability and Rehabilitation”, organised by the Platform for Sustainable Construction (CentroHabitat) and the University of Aveiro on the 17th of March. The issues discussed included the sustainability and conservation of wall and floor tiles, as well as the thermal behaviour of rehabilitated buildings. In terms of sustainability, Antero Marques Calvo argues, “the Portuguese ceramics industry has the motivation to keep up with the trend, convinced that our first challenge is to become aware of the environmental impact of all of our moves and actions, knowing that they can always be improved”. The Portuguese ceramics industry, Recer in particular, has an environmental record that speaks for itself and, 17 years after the inauguration of the first wastewater treatment plant in the sector, continues to follow an environmentally friendly policy, which includes the production of energy consumed, recycling water and solid waste, dust removal, among other measures. Apart from this, the company’s research and development team has been trying to find ways to replace subsidiary materials with more environmentally friendly ones. Urban rehabilitation was also mentioned in the debate as an area where tile manufacturing and architecture can meet. Recer, for economic and cultural reasons, has paid especial attention to this inescapable need of our housing stock and, among other measures, is now equipped to produce traditional tiles in the 10x10 and 14x14 formats and reproduce ancient pieces, also offering a hand painting service. Architecture on display... To present, “live”, the materials of various companies and debate research in architecture is the aim of Feira Darq which for one week, between the 12th and 16th of May, brought a “new” life to the cloisters of the Department of Architecture of the Faculty of Science and Technology at Coimbra University. This architecture exhibition was held in the cloister of the Colégio das Artes, in the old facilities of the University of Coimbra Hospital, and was part of the activities organised for the cultural week. The first initiative of this kind was held four years ago and has now returned, larger, with new contacts and more companies. The purpose of the event was to bring together and present to students and lecturers what is currently available in the market of relevance for those practising architecture, design or plastic arts, be they publications, construction materials or software and hardware. Recer was one of the 15 companies that attended this exhibition, which allowed architecture to show itself to the city. Recer was also present at the 4th Series of Conferences on Architecture, of the University of the Beira Interior (UBI), held on the 6th, 7th and 8th of May, supporting the development of an event which, in the eyes of the organisers, was seen as beneficial in helping to further the knowledge of all students in the Architecture course at that higher education institution. “In this sort of events we must, mainly, defend wall and floor tiling and highlight the significant technological evolution in the sector which allows us the ability to interact with architecture projects”, Daniel Santos, marketing director at Recer, points out. In Venezuela there are many market niches with a great potential for commercial development. Recer na visita do governo português à Venezuela “Ouro negro” e “diamantes” cerâmicos lado a lado Recer takes part in visit of Portuguese government to Venezuela “Black gold” and ceramic “diamonds” side by side H á oportunidades que não se podem perder. Recer was the only company of the Ceramics Industry sector to be part of the retinue. There are some opportunities that cannot be missed. And in Venezuela, one of the world’s emerging economies, there are many market niches with a great potential for commercial development. In this context, and as part of the visit of the Portuguese Prime-Minister to this country in May, Recer joined the retinue of 80 companies, committed to developing win-win partnerships. Venezuelan GDP is around 145.5 thousand million dollars (figures for 2005). It is estimated that, by 2010, this figure will more than double, thus representing a growth of more than 100% in just five years. Behind these figures lies the “black gold”. Venezuela currently produces a total of 3.2 million barrels of oil per day, which is worth more than any precious metal due to the huge increase in its price on an international scale. Portugal, which depends heavily on this energy source, contributes to this scenario, with daily imports of around ten thousand barrels. To offer support and solidarity to the strong Portuguese community in Venezuela was one of the aims of the visit that took place between the 13th and 15th of May. However, José Sócrates’ trip to Caracas was also seen as an excellent opportunity to strengthen the economic ties between the two countries and, here, the group of Portuguese businesses that accompanied him played an important role. In order to help correct the current trade deficit, the Portuguese government suggested (among other protocols) a trade agreement to Hugo Chavez and his peers, which would allow Portuguese products e serviços portugueses por petróleo venezuelano. Para Portugal, este é apenas um primeiro passo». and services to be exchanged for Venezuelan oil. Recer will play a role in helping to tighten relations and improve the Portuguese economy. This company, which was represented by Luís Ascenso (a Recer manager), was the only one in the Ceramics Industry sector to be part of the retinue. And it proved its worth, captivating the Venezuelan market with its innovative and topquality ceramic solutions. With the wide range of suggestions of floor and wall tiles in white paste and porcelain as its calling card, Recer’s visit could not have been more fruitful, with the signing of agreements and attracting potential clients in a market eager to receive exclusive suggestions in the ceramic finishing sector. For Luís Ascenso, “the business mission was a resounding success for most of the companies. For Recer, it allowed the company to enter a new market and set up a business partnership with a view to distributing its products in the largest cities in Venezuela. After the mission, delegates of this Venezuelan distributor have already visited Recer and negotiations are currently at an advanced stage”. The deals and memorandums of understanding signed may entail Portuguese exports to that Latin American country to the tune of three hundred million euro / year. In light of this scenario, the message of the Portuguese primeminister, thanking Hugo Chavez at the end of the trip, could not have made more sense: “Our trade relation is at a more ambitious level today than it was two days ago. For Portugal, this is just a first step”. REVISTA RECER JULHO - OUTUBRO 2008 15 The “built environment” currently represents 40% of energy produced on a global scale, a fact that, combined with increasing public awareness of the consumption of natural resources, can no longer be ignored by the main agents that operate in the construction sector. In Portugal, the first steps in the field of sustainability are now being taken, as part of a vision for the future. This is precisely what happened at the University of Aveiro with the round table on “Architecture and Sustainability”. Gonçalo Byrne, a key figure in national architecture, accepted the challenge set by the Platform for Sustainable Construction (see box) and, together with Recer, who organised the event, shared his views on the problems and challenges faced by modern-day habitats. The 118 chairs in the Amphitheatre of the Department of Mechanical Engineering were virtually full, mirroring the interest in the theme explored on that afternoon of the 16th of April. Apart from Gonçalo Byrne, Antero Calvo, chairman of Recer’s Board of Directors, and Victor Ferreira, a lecturer at the University of Aveiro and chairman of the Platform for Sustainable Construction, took part in this round table. This professor was responsible for introducing the topic under debate and the association he represents, “a unifying movement for innovation which aims to act as a link between the supply and demand for solutions to sustainability problems”. The speakers present – Antero Calvo and Gonçalo Byrne – were warmly welcomed, “as privileged agents in spreading useful information for the growth of this Platform”. All eyes were on Gonçalo Byrne and this famous architect fulfilled the audience’s expectations with a talk that was relaxed, yet always based on episodes from his professional life, displaying at once a multidisciplinary and modern vision, based on cultural changes and new daily habits. These changes in the way of living are, for Gonçalo Byrne, the main challenge of sustainable architecture: “The quest for comfort supported by technology has altered the concept of the city, a concept that today is undefined, with worrying consequences for sustainability”. According to this architect, key forces driving this trend include “the force of global economic pressures, through groups that operate in spheres of activity that involve significant energy consumption”. Gonçalo Byrne believes that architects have a crucial role to play in readjusting the “built environment”, by introducing a sustainability plan in the design of their projects, with a view to developing an eco-efficient project. In the same vein, Antero Calvo’s contribution aimed to show that sustainability in construction also involves a multidisciplinary approach by the architects, who should not neglect any dimension of their project, in particular in terms of finishings. “For the wall and floor tiles to be more than a simple application, for them to go beyond simple adaptation to achieve full integration, it is vital that construction and tiling must be conceived as a single unit”, he explained. Antero Calvo further argued that “works of undeniable merit” in the recent past, the result of “coordination demanded by architects and the profitable collaboration with the ceramics industry and plastic artists”, justify this joint work. Environmental issues were also mentioned, a field where Recer has always strived to be on the frontline: “Seventeen years after the inauguration of the first wastewater treatment plant in the sector, Recer continues to follow an environmentally friendly policy, which includes the production of energy consumed, recycling of water and solid waste and dust removal”. With his eyes set on the good examples of the past, but well aware that there is still much to be done, Antero Calvo believes that “Portuguese ceramics, fortunately, is alive and still has the desire and determination to cooperate”. The round table would not be complete if it were not opened up to the public, as happened after the talk by Antero Calvo. Many people were keen to participate, with various questions for the main speakers, thus extending the initiative into the afternoon. As 118 cadeiras do Anfiteatro do Departamento de Engenharia Mecânica, praticamente preenchidas, espelharam bem o interesse no tema explorado naquela tarde de 16 de Abril. The 118 chairs in the Amphitheatre of the Department of Mechanical Engineering were virtually full, mirroring the interest in the theme explored on that afternoon of the 16th of April. «A procura do conforto apoiada pela tecnologia modificou o conceito da cidade» “The quest for comfort supported by technology has altered the concept of the city” «Os problemas ambientais devem ser debatidos, cada vez mais, com maior frequência, intensidade e profundidade. “Environmental problems should be discussed more frequently, with greater intensity and depth. Not so much because these debates lead to definite solutions to today’s complex environmental problems, but rather because they help mould a collective awareness that sees intervention and discussion of environmental issues as a duty of citizenship. And to work hard to create and maintain an intelligent balance between use and enjoyment of environmental goods is, above all, a salutary exercise of citizenship that should be carried out individually and collectively. In my opinion, this is where the interest in events such as “Architecture and Sustainability” lies”. “It only makes sense to discuss issues such as these with people who have in depth knowledge of them. This round table has more than achieved this purpose. In fact, the full amphitheatre proves it. Initiatives like this one are rare and work. “Architecture and Sustainability” worked even better because the interventions were sensible and serious. Recer had the commendable initiative to bring together the academic and operational aspects. This deserves praise”. João Paulo Cardielos | Arqt.º (Albino Marta & Cardielos, Lda.) It makes sense to provide opportunities like this one, marked by the exchange of ideas. The intervention by the architect Gonçalo Byrne was quite enlightening, since it helped clarify the mechanisms that determine the development and research processes related to the Construction sector, an issue we all have to face”. Júlio Pedrosa | Professor da Universidade de Aveiro | Lecturer at the University of Aveiro «É sempre interessante ouvir falar de Arquitectura. “It is always interesting to listen to people talk about Architecture. However, when I discovered that the topic was related to sustainability, I expected this to be covered in greater detail. The way in which the architect Gonçalo Byrne focused on certain themes gave me a different perspective on them, namely the crucial need to mould new concepts to suit the final client, particularly in relation to the pre-conceived notion of comfort”. “Recer deserves a double congratulations: firstly, for bringing to this round table famous names in Portuguese architecture; but also for holding it at the University of Aveiro, where the future of the country is projected”. For adrenaline seekers, there could be nothing better than cycling down from the highest point in Amares (901 metres high), in Braga. Eight of the athletes who took on this challenge, on the 7th of June, combined courage and a spirit of adventure with “weighty” backing – Recer! The sales manager for Sanisousa – a company that distributes Recer material – is the driving force behind this group of friends, which got together four years ago simply to “keep fit”. Currently, Paulo Pereira and his MTB team have al- ready taken part in several competitions across the country and are even considering forming an association, in order to abandon amateurism. For now, Recer’s sponsorship helped ensure they were able to present themselves in the best way possible, with clothing suitable for the sport. The results are also beginning to show, for example at the Monte de Santa Isabel where they managed to achieve third and eight place, out of about 50 contestants. In this competition, set against one of the finest landscapes in the Minho region, aficionados of Freeride, a type of MTB (Mountain Biking), put on a show, with jumps, obstacles and drops across 18 km. Paulo Pereira is already thinking about the next two-wheel challenge, on the 26th of July in Viana do Castelo. At this event there will be close to 150 athletes, which will up the stakes: “MTB is a healthy habit, which appeals to our spirit of adventure and desire to overcome increasingly daring goals. I believe this is also the spirit of Recer, which has come to associate itself with the sport in all of its dimensions. For our group of mountain biking lovers, the company’s support has been vital”, he concludes. The Art Centre of the Júlio Resende Foundation is a space where one can feel the sensibility of Art and the understanding between Men. The pastoral landscape surrounding the River Douro, the serene flowing of the water along the banks of the river, which take one’s breath away due to their rare beauty, are a perfect framework for a location where one can sense the divine respect the Master painter has for Man. His Works are proof of this sentiment. A sensibility that the Master gently persists in sharing with whomsoever is moved to feel life as he does. The tiled panels that the Master painted in 1959, the year in which he also received an honorary mention at the 5th Biennial of São Paulo, for the then Pousada at Miranda do Douro, today the Estalagem (Hotel) de Santa Catarina, are proof of this. The prudence of his brush strokes, which reflect a profound respect for Life and for Man, make one feel that many of the answers to the innumerable questions Society asks, can be found in the simplest things of day-to-day life. All one needs to do is look with eyes that see and listen with ears that hear. Right in the natural park of the international River Douro, the Estalagem Santa Catarina is situated strategically on a hill overlooking the river, enjoying a spectacular view of the surroundings and …the soaring of the eagles and vultures, just in front. The restaurant which occupies the “Júlio Resende” room, where a large tiled panel painted by the artist can be seen, offers good regional gastronomy, the speciality being the Mirandela desert, in surroundings enriched by excellent service, the beauty of the artwork and views of the Douro and historic town, with the cathedral looming above in the centre. In the 276 square metres of Recer’s stand, located in Pavilion 1, the spotlight was on the conversations with the decorator Graça Viterbo (20th May) and the fashion designer Ana Salazar (21st May), two names which have long been associated with Recer, as part of the signature collections. … … Graça Viterbo With luxury or without formalities, Graça Viterbo designs with the apparent simplicity of natural beauty. Her reputation in the world of interior decoration is inextricably linked to the quality and attention she gives to each detail. In the field of ceramic finishings, she has designed a wide range of collections produced by Recer. After a meticulous study of colours, designs and textures, and heavily inspired by the Portuguese tile tradition, she put her name to, among others, the Pombal, Alfama, Sesimbra, Arco-Íris and Metalic Glamour series. “This partnership has gone so well that I hope it continues, since it is always gratifying for an artist to have a company like Recer calling on us to combine creation and innovation! On the other hand, not only are its products of an excellent quality, but Recer is a leading brand in the market and a big name”, this decorator remarked at the exhibition. … and Ana Salazar In turn, the fashion designer Ana Salazar, who 18 years ago, in partnership with Recer, began a new chapter in the history of the ceramics indus- try, the “Signature Collections”, assured us that “the Recer stand was very well achieved and really put the product in the limelight. There has been an extraordinary qualitative leap: there is in fact a very positive evolution, as I discover every year. And at the moment, versatility and the implementation of new technologies are what best characterise the Recer product”. The “Signature Collections” were a truly novel initiative in Portugal and represented a creative impulse in the world of ceramic finishings. Remaining loyal to the personality that characterises the life of its author, her ceramic suggestions import into tile manufacturing the formulas that dictated success in other areas. Challenging the imagination The so-called “Signature Collections”, such as the collections by the fashion designer Ana Salazar or the decorator Graça Viterbo, continue to bear witness to that commitment to create environments defined by difference. At Recer’s stand, therefore, one could find the solution for a modern decoration that invites a constant and intuitive challenging of the imagination, with no restrictions, merging styles and materials, in the quest for truly magical moments. From the concepts that exemplify its innovative nature and create new ceramic suggestions, at Tektónica Recer highlighted the Athabaska and Arts series. Manufactured using the most up-to-date ceramic technology, Athabaska is a sumptuous yet natural paving, designed for people with an exclusive and refined taste; essentially, people who nurture difference. As genuine as the natural thing, it is available in the 45x45, 30x60 and 60x60 rectified formats, in ice grey, graphite grey, sand beige, camel beige and savannah beige. On a different note, wallpaper is currently regaining an important position in the decoration of spaces, whenever the aim is to express individuality or even to convey a certain “status”. Recer is supporting this trend by launching, in tile format, the Arts collection, in the 30x60, 60x60, 30x120 and 60x120 formats. The colours (beige, brown, anthracite, green and orange) can be combined with Craft and Ashley, a set of decorated pieces. As part of the 10th edition of Tektónica - International Building and Construction Exhibition, the Portuguese Association of Traders of Construction Materials (APCMC) organised a seminar on “The market for building renovation”, which was backed by Recer. Pedro Botas, chairman of the Board of the Association, highlighted the importance of the Technology Platform for the Construction Sector, which is in the process of being institutionalised in Portugal, bringing together companies, research centres and other entities. For this director, the construction and materials sector is hungry for technology and open to innovation and therefore companies should redirect their activity to focus on this new reality. Vítor Cóias, chairman of GECoRPA - Association of Companies for the Preservation and Restoration of the Architectural Heritage, clearly defined the three axes that guide every rehabilitation action: scope of intervention, which can range from a plot of land to an element of a building; nature of the intervention, which may take on an environmental, constructive, structural, technical or cosmetic character, among other types; and degree of intervention, which may be in depth, moderate or light. After a short break, the Spanish architect Sigfrido Herráez Rodríguez, of the Rayet Group, presented the action plan for the rehabilitation of public spaces in Madrid. The city centre is an especially sensitive and valuable element. It is the political and historical symbol of a given area and therefore, for this architect, it is vital to restore the dignity that rightfully belongs to it. As a living organism, the city must be protected against infirmity, injury and other negative impacts. O profissionalismo e a tecnologia aplicada também me encheram as medidas». REVISTA RECER JULHO - OUTUBRO 2008 33 Holland – Over the centuries Holland has given the world many good things from the decorative arts. Delftware, during the XVII century, which influenced the entire European ceramic industry, is a good example of this. But the Dutch vanguard spirit goes beyond its frontiers to wherever it is necessary to bring back home the best from other parts of the globe. And one needn’t go much further, for in June Loek Lommers BV visited Portugal to find out about Recer. Loek Lommers BV is located in the municipality of Valenswaard, south of Endhoven. Its excellent position enables the company to reach a vast geographical area within the country and do business in the medium to top ranges with a large section of builders and also the final customer. The company, headed by Etien Lommers, deals in finished ceramics. From the sale of products to their application, the Dutch company is known for interior wall and floor coverings. Its new facilities, which opened in December 2007, demonstrate the importance of finished tiles for the Loek Lommers BV business. Its 800m2 showroom highlights the array of bathrooms products. Etien and his brother inherited their interest in this activity from their father and seven years ago the two men took over the reins of the company. Operating for 40 years, Loek Lommers BV is a family business which grew gradually and today it represents the most important brands in the international market of construction materials. In its rankings, Etien Lommers affirms that Recer “has an excellent ratio between quality/price”. During his visit to Portugal between 11th and 14th June, Etien Lommers, who was accompanied by his commercial manager, Coen Tils and agent Joop Mikkers (Nateco Tegeladvies BV), was fascinated by the manufacturing plant at Oliveira do Bairro: “I had an idea that the physical space used for manufacturing was large, but now seeing it, it is larger than I had imagined. The professionalism and technology met with my expectations”. As for the products, Etien Lommers thinks Recer has what the Dutch people are looking for in their houses. “In my country consumers prefer large formats, in white tones for the walls and black for the floors. When a Dutchman decorates his house he is already thinking how it will sell, and minimalism and monochrome make this easier” he explained. The Dutch company’s boss was also impressed by the Blue Stone and Arts series. As well as visiting the factory, the ID department and the showroom at Oliveira do Bairro, Etien Lommers, Coen Tils and Joop Mikkers went to see the showroom in Oporto, together with a group of other potential clients from Holland: Joop Vergeer (Tegelkunstenaar); Neal Veerman and Paul Machielson (GBM Tegels); and Patrick Verhoeven (Nateco Tegeladvies BV). That is why Morera & Vallejo did not hesitate when the time came to endorse the suggestion of Recer ceramic products, put forward by the firm of architects that had been hired to design a mixed purpose building in Seville: offices, shopping areas and a residential area. Among the Recer products chosen, we highlight the Xangai 33x90 rectified tiles, the Zaera Cinza 30x60 porcelain tiles, which were used on the terrace, as well as the Mediterrâneo Rosso 30x30 porcelain tiles, in an area well-suited to recreating the environment of an Andalucian patio. A maioria dos painéis, contudo, é da autoria de um mestre monogramista, o Padre Manuel Pereira, que assinava com o monograma P.M.P., e constituem um caso notável de associação dos revestimentos The hermitage of the Congregation of Monks of Jesus Cristo da Pobre Vida, although it was only recognised in 1578 following a Bull issued by Gregory XIII which granted them similar privileges to those enjoyed by the Mendicant Monks, since the year 315 gave life and strength to a community that would later give rise to the Convent of São Paulo da Serra de Ossa. This 12th century structure was recently turned into a hotel filled with charm and character. A reference in architecture, terracotta sculpting and garden art, this space stands out above all for its tiles, which take visitors back down the centuries. With a valuable collection of 54 thousand tiles, the Hotel Convento de São Paulo, after long periods of abandonment, plunder and being used for various purposes, is an example of family commitment to the recovery of Portuguese heritage. The Leotte Tavares family brings this true ceramics time machine to life … The refined cobalt blue tiles of the Serra de Ossa Convent date back to the kingdoms of D. Pedro II, his son D. João V, as well as D. José I, and represent a monumental collection produced in the best workshops in Lisbon. Some of the tile orders were destined for specific spaces and are likely to have had individual patrons, such as the Bishop’s Chapel, where we can find the signature of António de Oliveira Bernardes, or the Chapel of Senhora da Conceição, which can confidently be attributed to Gabriel del Barco. The majority of the panels, however, were designed by the great monogramist, Padre Manuel Pereira, who signed them with the monogram P.M.P.. These constitute an extraordinary example of the combination of tile wall coverings with very particular scenographic effects and the conscious modelling of the spaces, aspects which in fact characterise this artist’s best work. The construction of the convent’s staircase dates from 1707 (beginning of the kingdom of D. João V) and it constitutes the essential core of an interior pathway adorned with tiles in shades of cobalt blue on white, painted at the workshop of P.M.P. or in workshops within its sphere of influence. The tiles probably date back to between 1710 and 1725, though they may have been laid at a later date. These dates suggest the time that lapsed between the conception, the decorative intentions, the painting style and the production of this grand collection of tiles in workshops in Lisbon. In a book of Expenditures of the Order reference is made to a payment, in 1725, of 69 300 reis for the tiles in the atrium above the staircase. In the buildings where we can find tiles by P.M.P., we see that this master creates new iconographies that change the normal fruition of the spaces. Behind the conception of the tiles we suspect the presence of someone who thinks in terms of architecture, namely the ephemeral architectures of the baroque parties and theatrical scenarios, while at the same time developing narratives played out on the tiles. Therefore, we owe P.M.P. the creation or use of a new iconography – the Figuras de Convite, almost life-sized figures of servants and butlers painted on the tile panels, set beside doors, staircases, entrances to houses and gardens, as a way of characterising and ennobling these areas of transition, from the indoors to the outdoors, both in religious buildings and in Palaces and noble residences of the courtiers. Next to the heavy door to the Main Entrance area, two figures of monks painted on the tiles welcome the visitor, like Figuras de Convite. P.M.P. developed this iconography to create a theatrical situation: the entrance ritual, where the actors – figuras de convite – talk to the audience, which thus becomes an active character in the dramatic situation and becomes aware of REVISTA RECER JULHO - OUTUBRO 2008 39 Na igreja do Convento de Serra de Ossa, a solução de revestimento da parede de fundo que enquadra o portal interior constitui uma das mais espectaculares obras conhecidas do mestre P.M.P.. Os imponentes painéis pintados em tons de azul-cobalto sobre branco adaptam-se à estrutura seiscentista da igreja, ocupando os espaços arquitectónicos que se repartem em sequências narrativas coerentes, à maneira da pintura a fresco italiana. the importance and deep meaning of the place – the Main Entrance, the place, par excellence, for the Reception, equivalent to the Atrium in Palaces. Recall that in the atriums of the old palaces in the 17th and 18th centuries, the family would display their Coats of Arms and portraits of the more important figures in the House. In the church of the Serra de Ossa Convent, the solution for covering the back wall that frames the inner gateway is one of the most spectacular known works by the master P.M.P.. It is a monumental painting, almost in trompe l’oeil, on tiles, representing a “feigned arc de triomphe” used in Royal Wedding Parties or for the Royal Arrivals in cities. In the Serra de Ossa tiles, the structural elements of the triumphal arch support various sculptural, festive and landscape motifs, such as “Hermes”, boys with cornucopias, flower garlands painted diagonally across the composition and urns with sculpted bushes. All of the tiles in the body of the Church were conceived by P.M.P., as one can clearly gather by analysing the drawing and painting styles. The majestic tile panels painted in shades of cobalt blue on white adapt to the 17th century structure of the church, occupying the architectural spaces that are divided into coherent narrative sequences, like Italian fresco painting. WHO WAS PMP? Padre Manuel Pereira was chaplain to the queen, architect for the King and worked on the baroque conversion of the Olhão Palace in Xabregas. Here we find tiles by P.M.P., an amateur architect, decorator and master painter who was associated with a large tile workshop in Lisbon. A family passion The Convent of São Paulo was offered to a 16 year-old teenager by her uncle and tutor. In 1872, Manuel Fernandes bought the Serra d’Ossa Estate, with its respective convent, at a public auction. It was already in a poor state of repair, due to the inevitable decline that followed the extinction of religious orders. Carolina Amélia Fernandes Torres, the lucky girl, married the High Court Judge Henrique Xavier Corrêa da Silva Leotte, starting the family line. Always with the same proper name (or using its female equivalent, Henriqueta), we arrive at the representative of the fourth generation, Henrique Coutinho Leotte Tavares, the current owner. Together with his third wife, Maria Júlia Villarigues, he was responsible for the restoration begun in the 1990s, when the space was already in a serious state of disrepair. The neglect was fostered by the human damage which was felt in the areas that were not inhabited by the family, and there were also episodes of popular occupation in the period after the 25th of April. With a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the Sorbonne, Henrique Leotte Tavares focuses his business on the real estate sector. He established himself a few years ago with the project for the rehabilitation of the Fortress of Juromenha, but the Hotel Convento de São Paulo is still his second home. He set up a foundation that has focused on the cultural component, promoting exhibitions and shows.
