Cersaie 2009 is the 27th edition of this exhibition for specialist bathroom and ceramics decoration. Covering a total area of 345 thousand square metres, “Bolognafiere” will once again host what is considered the most modern and functional activity of a European exhibition centre. In addition to its excellent strategic location, the exhibition benefits from the goodwill accumulated over the years, which enables it to dictate the international trends in the sector. Recer will no doubt be on the frontline for introducing new products... According to Bruno Albernaz, director of Arena Direct, who is co-organising Constrói Angola – International Exhibition of the Building Industry, Public Works and Safety, the seventh edition of the exhibition is set to do even better than the 2008 event. “The development and strong dynamics of the economy and the building industry in Angola require greater numbers of companies in the market, so the organisers want the seventh edition to surpass all indicators of the sixth one”, he said at the closing ceremony of last year’s exhibition. July will see the launch of a new ceramics collection, produced by Recer and signed by Ana Salazar, which evokes a sort of luxury, sober and minimal, which is part of this designer’s universe. To give the collection a very special and distinctive touch, Recer and the designer opted to use smoother and more continuous textures, and bolder volumes. And for the first time in the Ana Salazar Signature Collections touches of gold and silver were introduced, which are combined with subtle crystal lustres. Chain & Fabric, Chalk & Icons and Crossed Stitches are a clear reference to some clothing collections and, as always, are suited to countless combinations depending on the preferences and tastes of the users of these new Recer ceramic materials, in floor and wall tiles. Portugal is currently in an ascendant phase of innovation and production technology, which essentially consists in business and people committed to sharing knowledge. Innovation can be defined as doing more with fewer resources, permitting efficiency gains in processes either productive, administrative or financial. It is, for this reason, a motor of competitiveness. Innovation crosses all areas of our business, but one that attracts more notice is precisely that of design. In this regard, we have recently launched a new collection - “Luxury”- designed by Ana Salazar, in the Centro Cultural de Belém, in Lisbon, the result of a partnership that is now 18 years old and which demonstrates the potential for Portuguese creativity. Innovation, in a global world, is also a lever for internationalisation, supporting a strategy of differentiation indispensable to sales at acceptable margins. But it’s important to realise that we talk about innovation at various speeds. On the one hand, there is the vanguard technological innovation in new sectors, which is taking its first steps and attempts to gain footholds in niche sectors of reduced size, both internally and externally. It is important for the country in terms of image, but makes little impact in national accounts. On the other hand, there are the traditional sectors of the Portuguese economy, such as ceramics, which weigh significantly in terms of GDP and exports and which have made efforts to modernise, it must be emphasised. In their own way these were and are agents of innovation and have invested in new manufacturing technologies, in new sales formats, in image and communication, in design... A sustainable policy ought to know how to invest, judiciously, in these two types of company and, in times of market turbulence and difficulties, privilege those that contribute most to the creation of wealth and the maintenance of jobs. In any case, innovation, in its various readings, is more and more a work of partnership. Connecting to knowledge centres is nowadays a necessary condition for the successful innovation. Long live, therefore, institutions like the University of Aveiro, the Technology Centre of Ceramics and Glass, IAPMEI, the Portuguese Centre of Design or, on a different level, COTEC. If a conference can be summarized in one word, the Portuguese Association of Building Materials Merchants (APCMC), that Recer supported and held in Tomar, between April 30 and May 2, that word would be ‘efficiency’. Alongside the development of good work, the efficient rehabilitation of buildings and energy use was the central theme of all the presentations given by invited specialists. This initiative has gained for itself year after year, according to its president, Afonso Caldeira, ‘the status of the principal forum for reflection and discussion of the present state of the sector and its environment, the problems it faces, and above all the opportunities arising from changes and trends now emerging”. Two issues were discussed which are at the centre of change within the current paradigm - Rehabilitation of Buildings and Energy Efficiency ‘ because this represents the future and a changing market which we should address’, he explains. As proof of the extreme care it takes with the environmental and energy aspects of both its activity and of the application of its products in different spaces, Recer decided to sign up to the newly created Casa Certificada (www.casacertificada.pt), an initiative of the consultant Tirone Nunes and the Energy Agency (ADENE). The main objectives of this platform are to contribute to the consolidation of the process of implementing Energy Certification and to help improve the energy-environmental performance of the built environment. Aiming to promote a dynamic and functional relationship between the supply of and demand for energy certificates, it offers information for property owners on the objectives, obligation, relevance, function and benefits of energy certification and promotes direct access to companies that offer constructive solutions that lead to a Certified Home. From an energy point of view, Recer was the first company in the sector of finishing ceramics to produce energy through cogeneration. It has been doing this for several years, and it sells the surplus to the public grid. New site in www.recer.pt Dynamic and focused on the message to the consumer: this was the spirit that presided over the structure of the Recer’s new website. “The idea of a unique and integrated communication, more up-to-date, more structured and more dynamic makes sense and can make all the difference, particularly from a promotional angle” insists Daniel Santos, Director of Marketing. The simple and effect lines of its logo-symbol matches a site with an equally simple structure, but organized as to content, facilitating consultation by the various publics to whom it could be interesting. Amongst the various components could be highlighted those of an institutional nature, with information on the company; of a commercial nature, setting out its products and services, or the Recer museum, allowing a virtual visit to the space where can be found tokens of over 30 years of activity. Go to www.recer.pt and stay informed as to the life of the company. Márcia Martins, from Adercus-Recer, will be at the European Mountain Running Championships, which this year will be held on the 12th of July in Telfes, Austria, for the second time in a row – one month after winning the silver medal in the national mountain running championship, organised by the Portuguese Athletics Federation. Adercus-Recer will therefore be on two pinnacles. This achievement, which has left the team thrilled, reinforces the success of the Serena team that is sponsored by Recer, and paves the way for the 8th European Mountain Running Championship, a competition that will be held in the “updown” system. Telfes (officially Telfes im Stubai) is a town in the district of Innsbruck, in Tyrol. It is 11 kilometres south of Innsbruck and has 1 400 inhabitants. Filipa Roque, Joana Santiago, Natacha Soares and Rita Simões, 12th year students at Our Lady of Assumption College in Famalicão Anadia, will never forget their project assignment, which led them to construct, with the collaboration of Recer, a sundial. From planning to production, including painting, everything was prepared by students, who obtained a rating of 20 marks, awarded by their educational supervisor Dr. Zara Coimbra. Recer made available 60x60-sized pieces of porcelain, as well as the necessary technical and human resources, so that firing could proceed to painting according to a pedagogical theme: the association between time and hours of work, meal-breaks and study. The sundial ought by preference to be placed in the lobby of their college, but benefits from being based on a mobile structure, prepared by Procer and can therefore be moved in space. The sundial is an instrument that determines the division of the day through the movement of the shadow of an index, the gnomon, upon which focus the sun’s rays, causing an outline to be projected onto a graduated base, or the display quadrant. A proposta pretende marcar uma rotura ao nível formal com o edifício existente, marcando um momento temporal que se traduz tanto na forma como na The project aimed at constructing a new building to replace the current Central Unit of the Hospital da Horta, in the city of Horta, Faial Island Azores. To demolish the existing building for safety reasons, increase the capacity of some existing services and give this unit some additional spaces were the underlying objectives. It is clear that an intervention of this nature is a complex set of “compromises” between the existing building and a typological ideal of what could be more freely developed in a building started from scratch. The set of position papers of the proposal is therefore constrained by what is already built and not subject to remodelling (e.g., the Operating Block and Imaging), and by reshaping the built environment within the Central Unit. The need to maintain the hospital in full operation during the execution of work within the circuits connecting the various departments, in order to reduce possible disruption to their normal functioning, is also a strong determinant in any proposal for action. The intervention, consisting in the construction of the new unit will assume a very formal idiom, making it distinctive in terms of the materials used and in terms of the modernity of some of the elements. The existing building is a set of units ranging between 1 and 3 floors, where the formal idiom is uniform and there is no significant element of visual reference. The proposal would mark a formal break with the existing building, marking a temporal moment reflected as much in the aesthetics of the materials chosen, resulting in a strong and con- temporary architectural statement. The great mass of the new building is intercut by a transparent element, which is the great “Atrium” of the Main Entrance, an element entirely made of glass, steeply inclined, extending 3 floors in height, that will also stand out as a reference point to those who approach the hospital complex. The new unit will be fully coated in ceramic tiles, playing with the contrast in both colour and height at the level of different masses, reflecting not only a decorative option but a concern for the costs of maintaining the building. It is proposed that ground floor be tiled in black ceramic, and the sections behind facing the east (Facilities for Parents, Gynaecology) and the section that adjoins the existing building (Outpatients, Medical and Infectious-Contagious Wards, IT and Voluntary Support Services). The remaining building will be clad in white ceramic tiles screen-printed with black motifs. The decoration of spaces, not just for experience and for work, has acquired a new epicentre: the ceramic finishing of today is grounded in the preoccupations of design. And the Recer products of this new millennium are surprising in allowing the exploration of new areas and fields of application. These range from clubs and bars to pastry shops, to oceanaria, to pousadas (hotels), retirement homes, gyms and even buildings in wood. Investing in careful design, both diverse and exclusive, using a variety of structures, textures and glazes, inspired by ancient times, nature or the more modern trends of the XXI century, the Recer ranges applied in a variety of settings reflect tradition and are, at the same time, signs of the times, seeking to be in line with the most diverse lifestyles. FERREIRA FERNANDES CONSTRUCTIONS This is the invitation of Ferreira Fernandes Constructions, who 25 years ago built housing projects in Torres Novas like those shown in the photos at the side, called the Casal Ramos, whose spaces augment a family ambience and inspire feelings of affection in all those who visit the show home. That identification is not unconnected with the end result achieved by the decoration, especially the Recer ceramic tiling. The Shanghai and Glass 33x90 rectified tiles and the Athabaska and Arts ceramics, amongst others, were the Recer series selected for the most diverse areas of these family homes, as they had already been in buildings previously constructed by this company. The porcelain floor-tiles are examples of this, combining unique technical features with amazing designs alongside other kinds of materials such as wood. The shape, the volumes and the composition arise thus naturally and in accordance with the type of function for which Carmel designed the space in the centre of Lamas. Located in a residential area, it is constituted as a ground-floor zone where the floor tiles were applied in a kind of rustic and matt gloss finish. In the kitchen, the same type of flooring tiles were used. To the walls of the bathrooms rectified tiles were applied in plain beige and brown up to the ceiling. The 1st floor bathroom floors were coated with glazed floor tiles mounted on a 16 mm layer of cement. The tiles were applied on layers of corrugated plaster of 13 mm that prevent the appearance of cracks. ABES POUSADA THE VENUS PASTRY SHOP In response to the architectural and decorative requirements of current aesthetic trends, the consistency and colour uniformity of a space depends on the harmonious combination and integration of ornamental solutions for walls, floors and ceilings. In the Venus pastry-shop project, the desired concept motivated the formative options that would result in a reduction of material in order to enhance the moments of inner enjoyment. Among the opaque façades stand out, for instance, the wood panels, the ceramic tile panels (Metallic Glamour from the Graça Viterbo collection), by way of their colour. The visual heat and its attractive effect are the essence of the project. This simple colour is intended to achieve a result similar to a panel light. It emphasises geometrical forms and lights. The area is lit from the ceiling by inset bright lights and by pendant lamps within orange shades. The design of this room responds to the space and projects a contemporary look. The decor follows a well defined concept of space — whatever might be their uses — convenient, practical and functional. The decorative repertoire of the matching pieces that Recer collections offer have therefore a priority: providing an harmonious natural ensemble to give each area a unique character. These were the concerns underlying the concept of the renovated Abes Pousada, located near the dam of Castelo de Bode, where the Arco-Iris (Rainbow) series of collections signed by Graça Viterbo were applied together with Zaera and Mediterranean porcelain fittings. Property of the Company for Assistance, Welfare and Services for Seniors, a family business formed in 2006, the Abes Pousada was rehabilitated with Recer products that facilitate cleaning and permit, in the longer term, the creation of renovated environments. At 42 years of age, he is one of the noteworthy new names in Portuguese architecture, with works and projects in several areas. These range from urban and territorial planning to residential buildings, tourist enterprises, hospital buildings, trade or services. Nationally or internationally, Pedro Balonas has won recognition commensurate with the originality of his architectural projects. The Tripoli Green Belt, Libya; the Maculusso towers and Luanda Bay, Angola or the Sea Life Center, in Portugal, which includes the implementation of Recer ceramic finishings, are just some of the buildings designed with the uniqueness and realism that this architect likes to give to his work. From the top veranda of his office - a late eighteenth century building of 1600 m2 overlooking the Douro River in Porto - he plans and analyses daily every detail of one of his most favourite objects of study: the river margins of Porto and Gaia. The Sea Life Center opened its doors a few days ago and even before opening it was already a landmark in Porto, a city where you have many other projects in hand. What does it mean for you to design the Sea Life Center or to carry out urban planning in the city? What is interesting is that Sea Life, obviously a private business, chose to locate itself in the city of Porto. No thought was given to the Algarve or Galicia. And why? Because such a facility needs a young and economically active population. Because a facility of one million litres could only at that size be profitable without a subsidy from the state. The Lisbon Oceanarium has a capacity of five million litres. The North of Portugal must realize that it is a region with great economic potential. Porto is two hours away from areas whose total population DESTAQUEZoom in 16 REVISTA RECER JULHO - OUTUBRO 2009 habitantes. E o Sea Life. É um marco, que ajudou a resol- is over 7 million. Reservations for groups completely booked out until September show that Sea Life made the right decision. On the other hand, Porto is still Porto. The city has not yet been marked by the more negative signs of globalisation, which in terms of tourism is a very big asset. Also we are able to find in Porto typical commerce, a way of being unique, a distinctive urban environment and a very particular form of relationship with the river Douro. This is rewarding in the work of an architect. Recently you won the international tender for the upgrading of the riverside area of Porto and Gaia. What made your proposal absolutely distinctive? My greatest ambition is to work on the two bank-side areas in an integrated manner. On both sides of the river exists a perfect notion that together they are worth more than they would be apart. The strategy is the same on both margins of the river: recuperate the population and boost the economy of this whole area, attracting professionals and designers in order to revitalize the economy and create new opportunities for the population already resident in the area. What would you highlight in this plan of reclassification? Two new bridges, one pedestrian, two elevators linking Miragaia and Massarelos to the higher parts of the city and two quays are central elements of the plan. Without interfering in the movement of vessels in the Douro, these facilities, together with the conversion of the lower span of the D. Luis bridge, will permit the creation of a touristical loop, in other words a pedestrian circuit of four miles, with a large commercial frontage which the tourists will pass by, joining the two banks of the Douro. What objectives choice? underpin this strategic The rehabilitation plan, expected to be com- pleted in 10 years, is basically a strategic document for the redevelopment of the waterfront. It is a mix of strategy and design. The main objective is to create value for the city through the expansion of the tourist circuit and the unification of the two sides by new river crossings. Having cultural animation as an anchor, a main objective is to improve mobility within the metropolitan area of Porto by creating new bridges between the low elevations of the city, or new connections between the high areas and the riverside. In terms of mobility, investment in the city is focused on the Porto Metro, which is all in the upper areas of the city, more or less limited by the Avenida da Boavista. Even the large circle line planned for the second phase falls within that limit. Is that why we say that Porto has two cities within the same city? Obviously, one part is near the river and the other is in the upper zone, with very few points of communication between them. One of the objectives of the plan consists, precisely, in connecting these two areas of the city via two lifts, one between the gardens of the Palácio de Cristal and Massarelos and the other between the zones of Cordoaria / Passeio das Virtudes and Miragaia. These lifts are also intended to maximise pedestrian movement and minimise car dependency in travelling between the high and low areas of the city, since the distances are not large and the slope is the greatest obstacle to movement. Were you inspired by some historical fact, such as the bridge of boats, in drawing up your project? Actually not. But I could well have been, since the bridge of boats, destroyed during the French invasion, was an extraordinary pedestrian-only link between the two sides of the river. And the replacement of this link, almost two centuries later, is crucial. Liberta-nos do trabalho de “ourives”, ‘The architect should pay attention to the scale of the city and of the human being.’ And Sea Life. Is there any special symbolism for you in designing this building in that particular area of town? From the urban point of view, it was an opportunity to work on an aspect of the city that was then unresolved. That building is now the key feature of the north-west of the city. It is a landmark, which has helped to resolve relationships of space and scale, between various urban elements of the Avenida Montevideo. On the other hand, it was also important to create a building that is a living object. Just look at it at night and you realize that we are in the presence of a medusa, which brings colour, light and life. Has the choice of materials, especially the tile finishing, helped towards achieving these goals? In terms of exterior finish, for example, the ceramic tiles were absolutely crucial. The owners of Sea Life, whenever they visited, said that it would never have occurred to them to use ceramics. Moreover, even if they had been asked for their prior approval they may not have given it. However, today they note the excellence of the choice and are happy to replicate the solution in future ventures. In the field of ceramics, did you prescribe Recer for some special reason? In the first instance, this was a function of the range, which is very broad and diverse. Then, in virtue of the technical support, which is excellent. For architects it is crucial to have the support of a technical structure that is compe- REVISTA RECER JULHO - OUTUBRO 2009 19 da necessidade de desenhar todos os pormenores do edifício, e permite-nos prestar atenção ao espaço à escala da cidade e do ser humano. O arquitecto deve acrescentar valor ao espaço urbano. tent and committed. Finally, it was also determined by the certification of the material, in order to give full guarantees to my clients. In an environment highly influenced by the sea, ceramic is more resistant than other alternative materials. Does this mean that, in addition to creativity, today’s architecture includes a large dose of realism? More and more... What prompted this development? On the one hand, the closer engagement of the construction industry, whether manufacturers or builders’ merchants. Both seek to meet the wishes of architects. Second, very much more restrictive legislation and conditions. And doesn’t this context limit creativity? I think not. It liberates us from the work of ‘goldsmiths’, of the need to design every detail of the building, and allows us to pay attention to the scale of the city and of the human being. The architect must add value to the urban space. Was this what you did in completing the Sea Life Center? What was the biggest challenge to do with this project? The building was completed in eight months, with six of preparation, and within budget... What is the next corner of Porto you wish to improve? Not a corner. It is a structural transit area in the eastern part of city, the viaduct of Areosa. It is an area that needs to be resolved with utmost urgency. The connection between Maia and Porto can not be made by means of that monstrous viaduct! And the rest of the country, where else do you want to make improvements to the urban space? Ah. Ah. Ah... (Reflects a few seconds, leaning back a little in the chair) This is a good question... Definitely in the degraded areas of the Algarve: in resolving the urban chaos of Portimão, Albufeira and Quarteira. In the international field, are Luanda and Tripoli the areas of choice in the development of your work? We do in fact have offices in Luanda and Tripoli. This explains the many projects that we do there. But we are also developing partnerships in Algeria and Morocco. North Africa is very important to us... Why is it important? We have found that there are more affinities than points of dissimilarity, despite the natural cultural differences. On the other hand, in North Africa I am able to revisit Portugal of the 1960s. The attention you devote to ceramic tiling is it related to your appreciation of the Arab world? Certainly it is. I value the Moorish heritage in architecture and ceramics. E no resto do país, onde quer valorizar o espaço urbano? Ah. Ah. Ah… The model and actress Rita Pereira recently visited the showroom of Recer in Porto in order to select collections of ceramic tiling to redecorate the house she bought just over a year ago. During a sojourn in Porto, where she was appearing in the musical “The Producers”, which was on at the Coliseum until April 26, Rita Pereira confessed she was pleasantly surprised, both by the colour and aesthetic diversity, and the contemporaneity of the products featured. Daughter of Rui Pereira, the well-known ceramicist, the model revealed not only an established aesthetic sense but a broad knowledge of the world of ceramics. The Freedom series, which is signed by Ana Salazar, and the Impression collection, belonging to the Fusion series, were the lines that most captivated the actress, who in the musical “The Producers” played the role of Ulla, a Swedish sculptor with ambitions to learn to dance, sing and act... A few years after the ending of Sweet Fugitive, how would you evaluate this experience on television? It was a very satisfying experience, because it was the first time I took on the role of the protagonist and this was a baptism of fire. On the other hand, people identify themselves closely with the star of the soap opera and they very much lived that experience with me. The affection that I received was very good and repaid all those hours of work. Do you think you were born with a gift to be an actress? I did not want to be an actress, but a dancer. I do not know if I was born with a gift or not. I just know that it’s something I like doing, in which I have invested, and about which I have tried to learn more and more. I hope to continue doing it. Do I have a gift or not? I think other people know more about this and can judge for themselves. The last scene was overwhelming. What was it like to film in the Alvalade XXI full of football fans rather than extras? It was powerful. I was nervous about the fact that you could fall and slip amongst all those people. The scenes did not inspire nervousness, but the fact that thousands of people attended, without knowing what would happen nor how they would react left me very nervous. And did you have any opportunity to rehearse the scene? No, I had no training. Neither did I know what would happen. I knew I had to run into the middle of the stage, but they did not even let us try out the scene. Being untrained in the field, we thought we might slip. Are you thus always so committed to everything you do? When I decide to do something, I like to do things well. I do it with all my heart and with total commitment. I was always like that. That is the secret of surviving in this world. Fame today is a myth. There are many ups and downs, as people tend to value fame and few who want to be actors because they really enjoy it or actually engage in what they are doing. Ainda continuo a jogar street basket e a ver jogos. Anda sempre comigo. Consegui conciliar sempre as duas coisas. REVISTA RECER JULHO - OUTUBRO 2009 23 best of ourselves, we were all very friendly, very united. All of us fought together to realize that very project. Fought in what respect? Initially, we were not very keen, because it was a soap with so much fantasy and juvenilia. Then we saw what could result, and that it could be very nice. Our union caused us to work for the same goal. Sometimes, there are those who are less interested in a given project and here, fortunately, this did not happen. Those outside the world of soap operas have the impression that many of the actors, especially the younger ones, are easily dazzled. Is this true? Yes, it happens a lot. I think it very much depends on the education we had at home. I have done soaps for 5 years and still continue to be the person I always was. I have parents who always pull me down to earth when I want to fly a little higher. I know who I am, I know where I came from, I know what I want and treat everyone equally. So, how do you recall your childhood and youth in Carcavelos, when you dreamed of being a dancer and playing in the basketball league? I enjoyed basketball, in fact, since I was small, because my father was a player and I, too, ended up by joining the sport. I was a league player for 5 years but then had an injury and left. But it is still a passion with me today. I still play street basketball and watch games. I turn on the TV whenever I can during the NBA games. And your childhood? How would you describe it? we know what we want, that we can work in a team, that we are professionals, that we are punctual. This is equal to, or more important than, knowing the text. Have you seen Kachorra, the original Argentinian version of Sweet Fugitive? Only when I finished Sweet Fugitive did I see the original so it did not influence the work that I was doing. And frankly I prefer our version. Although the Portuguese version is addressed to a younger audience, Kachorra still succeeded in being more of a fantasy than the Portuguese version. It was even more magical... And how do you compare them from the technical point of view? I think Portugal is moving increasingly towards soap operas and at a very high standard. They are very close in quality to the Brazilian soap operas. What was decisive in bringing Portugal to this position? Dedication and investment. The awareness that people appreciate soap operas, and that this is a type of product which stands a high chance of success. What do you most remember about Strawberries with Sugar? I recall the first day of recordings. I was nervous, and knew little about what would happen. It wasn’t the first time I’d been in a soap opera but it was the first time I was one of the main characters. And I remember the 500 people per day that attended the recordings. In terms of teams, in which one were you better integrated? In Sweet Fugitive, without a doubt. The Sweet Fugitive team was the best so far. We gave the I am lucky because I had a very happy childhood. I had very happy parents and a sister and we were always very dear to each other and all very united. I always practised many sports and went on to join the scouts. I was not a child who had everything I wanted, but this also helped me to fight and continue to fight for what I did want. I didn’t come from a rich family. My mother is an infants’ teacher. My father is a professor. We lived well but never got to have those 70 Barbies! I had a Barbie when I’d earned it. All this was crucial in my education. You are a basketball fan and they say you still consider your best gift to have been a ball given by your mother? Is that right? It was a ball that my mother brought from the U.S., where she has family. I remember it because only they had balls of rubber. The ball has great symbolism for me. Even today I always take it with me in the car. It comes with me always. And do you play with it? From time to time I stop and play with it. I even brought it to Porto. It is horrible! (laughs). People do not like my ball! They are always asking: “Have you got that ball with you again? The ball goes with me almost everywhere. I didn’t take it to Cuba with me recently, but I still played basketball there. GENTE RECERRECER People 24 REVISTA RECER JULHO - OUTUBRO 2009 From sport to the theatre, however, is quite a long distance. Was your sports training a help to your acting? Yes, the fact that sports helped me to be physically fit, for example horse riding for many hours in Sorcery of Love. During the recordings there was a whole day of horse riding and those who ride know that 15 minutes can cause some hellish back pain, let alone 12 hours of it. The fact of being physically fit also helped a lot in acting. I started in theatre and have practised sport. I have always been able to reconcile the two things. I’ve always had several hobbies at the same time. I did amateur theatre for five years. Is that why you decided to be an actress? I decided to be an actress purely by chance. I worked as a model 11 years ago and began to do a lot of television advertising. The advertising work gave rise to opportunities. The more I talked in publicity spots the more I was chosen and then my agent started to send me to casting sessions for soap operas. Strawberries with Sugar grew out of this. In general popular prejudice leads people to believe that girls who go in for sport are less beautiful, less elegant than those who go in for other fields of endeavour? Did this ever occur to you or what? ing the water. After I had about four months of singing lessons the teacher said I was fully tuned up and could go out and do anything. Finally, I am able to. No, I didn’t give it a thought. Sport will continue to exist in my life whereas fashion arose by chance. I was walking in the street and they invited me to go to an agency. I ended by signing up and things began to happen. I never had any ambition to be a model. I would have followed the dancing side rather than acting. I’d been training in ballet since the age of three. I had four years of jazz dance and I always kept up with the latest trends in the field of dance. But I also practised volleyball and swimming... Was the presence of RTP in Dance With Me a decisive one? How is this experience in the musical “Producers” going? It is my first time on the professional stage, my first time in a professional theatre, my first time in a musical. I never imagined being in a musical because I always sang very badly, and wouldn’t even sing in the shower for fear of scar- No, it had nothing to do with being chosen. I don’t think they even knew I was in Dance With Me. They didn’t invite me to the casting sessions. I called in to ask if there was anything I could do. What is it like acting the part of Ulla? It’s great fun. She is a character that’s got nothing in common with me, not even in terms of external appearance. It’s a great challenge therefore. I prefer doing people who have nothing to do with me a thousand times more than characters that are a little bit like me. Ulla is the typical dumb blonde that ultimately turns out not to be so stupid. In fact she turns out to be smarter than the accountant with whom she gets involved. But she is a typical girl who wants to be famous, so REVISTA RECER JULHO - OUTUBRO 2009 25 Por sistema o preconceito das pessoas leva-as a pensar que as meninas que vão para o desporto são aquelas menos bonitas, menos elegantes e que as outras vão para outros universos? Acabei por me inscrever e as coisas começaram a resultar. Mas é típica miúda que quer ser famosa, portanto não tem nada a ver comigo. therefore is nothing like me at all. Why do you prefer characters who have nothing to do with you, as in Fascination? It is a way of discovering new feelings, new aspects and other sides to myself that maybe I didn’t know existed. Acting works very much through our feelings, our experiences and sometimes puts us in situations we will never go through. In the soap opera Fascination there was an Indian woman who had lost her son in the war. Obviously I will never go through that. How does it feel to play in a musical by Mel Brooks that won 12 Tony Awards? I feel proud. Sometimes when I’m on stage, even during the performance, Tico and Teco are asking: are you even aware that you’re here? It is a wonderful experience, especially with the blessing of Mel Brooks, who gave me an autographed poster. This visit to the Recer showroom in Porto also seems to have produced in you a feeling of happiness? It did. I was not expecting so much variety and so many modern and beautiful products. Usually when people talk about ceramics they talk about floor tiles. However I’m an exception. My father is a professor of art, a ceramicist and also works on tile panels. But I never thought that Recer had so much variety and so many up-to-date and modern things. I love many of the designs. Choosing will be a great challenge, but you saw my reaction to the collection of feathers (Freedom, which is signed by Ana Salazar) and the fingerprints (Impression, belonging to the Fusion series). Are Recer ceramics at the same level of quality as the current production of soap operas? Soap operas would wish always to use Recer tiles in their houses. Recer is closer to making a soap opera with Globo than maybe any national soap. The range of porcelain Recer products and tiles includes specific solutions for the markets of Central and Eastern Europe, where Russia, an export destination since 1995, is clearly a priority. The presence in another exhibition in the MOSBUILD series, held from March 31 to April 03 in Moscow, amounted to a strategic inevitability, amongst the activities promoted by the Associação Empresarial de Portugal (The Association of Portuguese Companies)(AEP). This year, Recer displayed its products under the motto Nature, which reflects not only the company’s environmental concerns in its business activities, but also represents an inexhaustible source of inspiration. Recer’s Nature collection, with emphasis on the series Butterfly, Coral, Ginco, Shell, Orion and Heron, invokes nature and its light. Nature, therefore, consists in colour, texture and shape, expressive and immediate manifestations of human sensitivity. The new product lines presented in several areas, and the privileged location of the stand, during the five-day fair, produced a strong showing on the part of the public, who seemed particularly pleased with the series Coral and Shell (wall tiles), and Arts and Time (porcelain floor tiles). A clear challenge in international markets, Recer, S.A. has achieved annual average growth rates of around 25% in volume of business done through foreign distributors. Notable has been the growth in turnover with European Union countries — with France, Belgium, Greece, Germany, Norway, England and Holland the countries where the deployment of the brand is more significant. In 2008 exports reached a global quota of about 46% of the total sales of the company. As for Russia, ‘Recer is investing in this market, which is not limited only to Moscow, despite the crisis being felt around the world and devaluation of the Russian currency, and believes that the country will recover from the crisis faster than member states of the European Union’, says Michael Rose, Recer Area Manager. ntre as 17 empresas portuguesas que em finais de Abril regressaram de uma missão empresarial ao Irão, a Recer foi uma das que deixou “esboçadas” naquele país parcerias ao nível da representação e da distribuição de produtos portugueses. Among the 17 Portuguese companies that in late April returned from a business mission to Iran, Recer was one that has “sketched out” in that country partnerships at the level of representation and distribution of Portuguese products. ’Iran today presents business opportunities of great interest to Portugal’, stressed the President of the Business Association of Portugal (AEP), José António Barros, who headed the Portuguese mission. Its vice president, Paulo Nunes de Almeida, has now said that the mission went very well for the business sectors of pharmaceutical, food, machinery and tools, information technologies and tiles. In a review of the initiative, which was joined by the Secretary of State for Trade, Services and Consumer Protection, Fernando Serrasqueiro, Paulo Nunes de Almeida considered the fourday visit to Iran as “very positive”. That view is shared by Recer, which ‘established contacts with Iranian authorities and economic agents with a view to identifying possible business opportunities’, affirms Luís Ascenso, administrator of Recer. Now in the market under the name of Planitum, this promises to be “the new architectural surfacing” and was presented at Tektónica 2009 - the International Fair of Construction and Public Works, which was held from 19 to 23 May, at the International Fair of Lisbon. In an exhibition area of 272m2, located in Hall 1, Recer displayed one of its latest products, bringing many added-value benefits to the construction market and new possibilities for ceramic wall tiles. The reduced thickness of only 3 mm, the expressive force of the material, the softness and ease of processing that characterise Planitum products are the elements that open the product to the most varied fields of application (see section on New Bets). The highlight focuses naturally on the possibility of remodeling the floors by the overlaying of Planitum units upon the already existing tile surfacing. The thermalPLANITUM introduced by Recer has been distinguished by an Honorable Mention in the “Innovation Space”, a competition held annually by Tektónica, which identifies within in a single space innovative proposals in the market for construction materials and demonstrates the ability of Portuguese firms to develop and manufacture quality products. Recer was the only company in the ceramic industry to be so distinguished. The prefix Thermal has a descriptive function involving the thermal property of the laminate Planitum: the heat dissipated by the outer surface is generated within the laminate through the electrical resistance that makes up a part of it. The thermalPLANITUM - based on the laminate PLANITUM with a thickness of 3mm - has the capacity to generate heat in the outer surface, moderating the ambient temperature inside the home, or serving as a source of energy for heating and drying operations in bathrooms. With a specific power of up to 0.25 W/cm2 and adjustable temperatures limited, for safety reasons, to 45º C, the use of thermalPLANITUM provides all conditions for protecting the user, working with alternating voltages well below the recommended muito inferiores ao limite de segurança preconizado para ambientes de humidade relativa elevada. P Planitum and Tea Rose, together with Moon, are products that will enable Recer to reinforce its position in the world of contemporary architecture and quality design. Two new launches, two new suggestions that revolutionise the way of thinking about the architecture of indoor and outdoor spaces. Planitum brings to mind a vast level surface. Perfect smoothing, large sizes, luminosity and flexibility are the strong points that give this product added value and make it “the new architectural surface”. Planitum, which is available in exclusive large formats with a maximum length of up to 100x300 cm, is a highly innovative porcelain product designed for contemporary and modern architecture. Ideal for decorating public and private indoor areas, for covering buildings and elements of urban equipment or renovating environments in a practical and simple way. The fact that it is only 3 mm thick means it is possible to, for example, renovate flooring without having to remove the existing ceramic surface. The expressive force of the material, the smoothness and ease of processing that characterise the Planitum pieces are the factors that open up the product to a wide range of fields of application. Its unique sizes make it suitable for any kind of creative and structural need, for indoor and outdoor use. The range of colours and the possibility of cutting any size required allow the end consumer to personalise any space with excellent results. With the name Tea Rose, this new Recer collection is an invitation to contemplation and mysticism, which evokes in wall tiles the centuries-old ritual of preparing and drinking tea. The Tea Rose series by Recer celebrates those principles and creates atmospheres that appeal to the harmony between people and the space, respecting the purity and identity of surrounding objects. The Tea Rose series comes in a wide range of colours: White Pearl, Light Silver, Soft Rose, Rose Garden and Gold Jewel, in a 33x90 rectified format, helping to create new serene spaces filled with personality, incorporating a design product conceived to answer to the new appeals from interior design. This series is associated with Moon, which are ceramic porcelain floor tiles in Rose and Grey, in 60x60R and 30x60R formats. The ultimate effect is a blend of elegance, modernity and boldness, the result of the combination of its colours with the metallic nuances that characterise it. France - Established in 1973, Nuovosol, who in March visited Recer, with whom they have had business relations for five years, works in the marketing of ceramic tiles and other building materials, having as preferred customers public institutions, including municipalities, contractors and builders. With 20 employees, they market materials, on average, for twenty thousand social housing homes per year. At the time when the agent Olivier Vernigi and clients Yves Pichoir, Rachid Amri, Jacques Pruni, Julie Muriel Blanc, Claude Feraud visited Recer, Nuovosol had completed a participation in the construction of 150 studios for students. From what they had the opportunity to visit, they especially appreciated the facilities of Modicer, a firm within the Recer group, whose products and quality qualify them ‘as at the level of the Italian series’. That is what justifies, in everyone’s opinion, the good reception that Recer products have met with in the French market, whether in the field of traditional products, or, more recently, in the larger formats increasingly appreciated. MUNDO RECERRecer world 34 REVISTA RECER JULHO - OUTUBRO 2009 Cerâmica e artigos sanitários Ceramics and Sanitary Ware A força do trabalho The strength of the work Esposende - Aos 43 anos, Leonardo Teixeira é um empresário realizado. Aprendeu o know-how. Estabeleceu contactos. Contractors and retailers are amongst the main customers and Recer amongst the main suppliers. The first synergies began 7 years ago, after a contact he requested at a trade fair in FIL. “The quality, good service and availability of the product and service given have been the key to the continued preference for Recer,” explains Leonardo Teixeira, for whom ‘success is achieved through rigour, commitment and work’. ROTA DA CERÂMICACeramic Route 36 REVISTA RECER JULHO - OUTUBRO 2009 Museu de Alberto Sampaio The Alberto Sampaio Museum Azulejos hispano-mouriscos para ver à noite Hispano-Moorish tiles to see at night A Rota da Cerâmica, desta vez, conduz a Guimarães. The Route of Ceramics, this time, leads to Guimarães. Not to see the traditional tile panels that everywhere decorate numerous monuments and buildings in Portugal, but to publicise a very special collection of ceramics in the only museum in the country which, during July and August, opens its doors at night: the Alberto Sampaio Museum. Founded in 1928 to house the art collection of the defunct College of Our Lady of Oliveira and other churches and convents of Guimarães at that time held by the State, the Alberto Sampaio Museum has been located in the historic city centre, a World Heritage Site, since December 2001, in the place where the countess Mumadona, in the X century, built a monastery. It has collections of great interest that feature jewellery, sculpture, carving, painting, ceramics and textiles. These include an emblematic piece of military dress, the ‘loudel “which D. John I wore during the Battle of Aljubarrota and the triptych of gilded silver given to him by Our Lady of the Olive. In the field of ceramics, the collection includes more than 1750 units of mixed tiles, constituting 409 sets of tiles of different ages and backgrounds. Amongst these, there are more than 130 examples of Mozarabic and Mudejar tiles of Spanish-Moorish production, considered quite rare. With a couple of models from the end of the REVISTA RECER JULHO - OUTUBRO 2009 37 A par dos modelos do final do século XV e início do século XVI, executados pelas tradicionais técnicas de “corda seca” e “aresta”, também existem alguns azulejos invulgares, da recuada produção de Niebla, centro cerâmico dos séculos XII e XIII na província de Huelva – como descreve o artigo «Colecção de Azulejaria do Museu de Alberto Sampaio», da autoria de Rafael Salinas Calado, Isabel Maria Fernandes e António José de Oliveira. «Estas peças quadrangulares, de menor dimensão que as habituais, são muito espessas, têm as separações entre as cores (cordas secas) muito nítidas, usam esmaltes gordos, um pouco baços, em fifteenth century and the beginning of the sixteenth century, executed by the traditional techniques of “dry line” and “edge”, there are also some unusual tiles, late productions of Niebla, a XII and XIII century centre of ceramics in the province of Huelva - as described in “The Tile Collection of the Alberto Sampaio Museum”, a document written by Rafael Salinas Calado, Isabel Maria Fernandes and António José de Oliveira. “These square pieces, smaller than usual, are very thick, have very clear separations between the colours (dry lines), using fatty glazes, a lit- tons de branco, ocre amarelo, verde acinzentado e roxo. The other examples follow the best-known models of the patterns within the Spanish-Moorish repertoire and are, most probably, all of Seville manufacture, both those from the quattrocento with ‘geometric tracery’, and the ones from the sixteenth century where a clear renaissance influence can be recognised”, the authors note in the document. In the inventory system of the main office of the institution there are registered more than 125 different models documenting standardised types of coatings used in the XVII century, represented by more than 1100 tiles. Others, nearly 700 specimens, represent Portuguese tiles of the eighteenth-century. From the neo-classical period to the end of the nineteenth century, more than one hundred tiles show the various trends in taste and exemplify the evolution of production techniques. The twentieth century is represented by close to 70 examples. Amongst the collection of ceramics, there is also a panel with floral motifs of the seventeenth century, produced in the Studio in Lisbon and which belonged to a group from the convent of Our Lady of Hope, also in Lisbon. A similar panel belongs to the National Museum of the Tile. Both represent flowers in the same style. All the vases represented are identical. Only the images that decorate them are different. One example shows peacocks, which symbolise the resurrection and immortality of the soul. The other shows a panel of square tiles in polychrome (185x142 cm) bordered by small human figures (Putti). These representations symbolise the theological virtue of Hope. The painters of Portuguese tiles worked in accordance with international motifs and this series of floral vases is based on a Flemish engraving by Theodor de Bry, based on a painting by Jacob Kempener.
